Victoria WVO .

So I am thinking about converting my 01 jetta over, but I need to find place that already has filtered WVO in the Victoria area. Any one know who is filtering it here on the island.
I would like to start filtering it myself, but not right now.

I finally found a source and hope to find more as I doubt this will supply me enough, I am though setting up a centrifuge filtering setup and would interested in a co-op but would clearly need more oil. I would be up for filtering oil for you if you have a source. some kind of unfiltered to filter trade in would need to be worked out to help offset the costs of the setup and the filtering costs (electricity and time mostly).

Where are you at now with the sourcing? I'm in Vic and I might be able to spare some time to help out/learn.

Did the summer pan out for you as far as getting all set up with WVO? I'd be very interested in working out cost, time and sourcing with you if you still think you need it.

Feel free to stop by here if you guys are ever up in Nanaimo, I can give you the tour of our setup. Right now I'm filtering 100-200 litres per week, but I'm hoping to get more supply and a beefier set up going as there is a lot of local interest in driving on WVO.

well I thought I had 2 restaurants but they haven't called for a pickup since the first time, I'm going to go in and check up on them soon, see what's what. I have a buddy that used to be pretty high up in the moxie's org and knows tons of people in the vic food services, I will see if he can help me out. My dieselcraft centrifuge has been ordered and the pump should have been too, once all that arrives I will start building the filtering system, my spare injectors should have the new nozzles from elsbett installed and pop tested by the end of the week so I should be able to do the install in a weekend or 2 unless something else takes priority (getting stuff done at your dads yacht repair company for free isn't exactly fast as you as always last on the list). I have a couple of drums of recovered diesel out there that I can use after I get the filter up and running and 15 cubes of oil to filter as well. If your in Vic and have oil but no way to filter it I will be able to soon,, everything else will work itself out, I'm not looking to make any money just don't want to pay for diesel anymore :)

Hi Loki -- I too have oil but no capacity for filtration at the moment. I'll be away all winter but have 3 cubes now that I'd love to get filtered this month.

While I'm at it, would love advice from you WVO techies out there: the oil i have has been used by a guy in a converted diesel VW van for three years now, but he doesn't filter or dewater it. He just lets it settle for a couple of weeks then pumps it out with a special pump that doesn't dredge up the dregs. He says it's very clean to begin with. I've had it for a couple of weeks but have been reluctant to use it. Any thoughts?

not worth the risk IMO. heating and settling and just sucking off the top where all the clean stuff is is ok, but I wouldn't trust it.

Test it for water content after you've settled it... I've done some experiments with settling and 1 month seems to be enough to get the oil looking crystal clear - much clearer than oil that was not settled but filtered to 10 microns. What I would do is settle it and then have a 10 or 5 micron filter on the pumping setup when you're filling the tank so any stray particles gets taken care of so you don't end up changing the van's filter every 2 tanks.

or run it through a centrifuge an it will likely be cleaner than either in a much shorter time imo.

Water test involves getting a frying pan (or something) smoking hot in the oven, then putting some oil on it. If there are any bubbles it's got water, if it just spreads and smokes it's okay. To de-water you can use something like a turkey deepfryer, or an old hot water tank. Centrifuges will also dewater because the water is heavier and will be trapped in the rotor like dirt.
