sound system and cup holders

Post by Bucket2 »

Hi, I just bought a '93 low roof from one of the forumites and was wondering about a new stereo (still has the factory original) and installing an aftermarket cup holder in the space left over.

Does any one know of a cup holder that will fit in the space left over?

Let me know.

Cheers

Look on ebay for a 'single-DIN cupholder/coin tray' or something worded like that. Make sure it says the 'single-DIN' part otherwise you'll be getting a vehicle-specific arrangement and it won't fit. The one I put in Moon Machine was from the States - I haven't found anyone who sells them here and even the guy at the audio shop was surprised to see I had something like it. Sadly, these vehicles are from before the cupholder/soccer-mom/85-kids-in-the-back/monster-slurpee-cup-adapter-and-juice-box-holder craze that swept the North American mini-van market.

Course, I got an '88 Golf and the cup holder in it is an original 6'2" pair-o'-thighs model - little too warm sometimes when the contents slop outta the sippy hole over those larger speed bumps. Ouch!

Something like this might work, although the description is poorly worded: http://cgi.ebay.ca/Car-drink-holder-cup ... 638Q2em122

I think these are darn good ideas. Although I saw one recently and my only complaint is that the cup blocks the stereo. Perhaps it could be installed so the cup holder sits over top the stereo instead of below?

We thought of that too, but given the way the stereo is recessed into the dash at the top of that opening, I don't think the cupholder thingy would fit that well - ie hold a cup without being tilted forward because of the dash.

That being said, those cupholder trays are really meant for cans or cups that are the shape of cans, so most of the cups we use over here in NA (with the can-sized bottom flaring out to a monster slurpee sized top) won't fit that well into the holder. We're a bit conservative with our drinking vessels, so we don't have a problem.

Hi, thanks for the idea. I'll look for a single din holder on ebay and at a couple of wreckers as well.

Cheers
