shoulder belts in rear

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

shoulder belts in rear

Post by wmg »

Hi. My wife (D) and I are looking for a Delica and took our first test drive today (1990 Super Exceed). D noticed right away that there were no shoulder belts in the back, which is a deal stopper due to kid safety (has long been a bone of contention in our 78 Westie). Can anyone tell me if later models have rear shoulder belts for all back seats?

i beleive 91 was the year they started with shoulder straps, although some 91's have em, others don't, but there are holes and mounting brackets in the pillars. search the form, there's a great deal of discussion about child seats here, including how to mount the anchors yourself.

I think it was around Aug '91 that they started with the rear shoulder straps. That's why we bought our '91 Super Exceed instead of the '90 Super Exceed that we test drove.

there has also been a post by Glen from ccautos that the holes in the pillars where you could mount the shoulder straps on the older ones are not reinforced like the newer ones and not nearly strong enough, so not a simple bolt in option. Some '91's have them and some don't because they started adding them on a specific date in the middle of the '91 model year run.

Don't bother with a pre-rear shoulder belt delica if you have kids. It's not as easy as just bolting belts into the holes in the pillars - I looked into this thoroughly when I was looking to buy. The newer vans also come with side impact beams in the doors, and factory 3rd brake light. Don't compromise safety, wait for the right van to come along.

The later models have shoulder belts for four of the five rear seats (not the center of the rear bench). And by the way, kids love delicas. The windows are large, and the high ride means they can see a lot more than in most cars - and throw in crystal lite roofs and they are very happy.

Thanks to all who replied. I had looked in the forum, but was unsure if
of how many belts were actually there. Now I know. And I'll wait for the right one.
