Getting a Delica - and contemplating a dilemma

Post by FlyingBarney »

Hi all,

I am almost sure it is going to be a Delica for me in the near future. Test-drove 2, with 2 different dealers. Right now, am inclined towards Japanoid, though also want to check out Amazing Auto Imports (is this Mardi that people mention here?).

Finalized details - Delica. Year 92 or 93, with preference for mileage on the lower end (say, under 100,000 km), though not too low. Not from the North (Hokkaido, snow, salt, rust, bad...). Automatic. Captain seats. Etc...

One of the current dilemmas is the following. I have a dog, who loves to have his head out the window, yet does not like being in the front seat. Seems that the models with the crystal roof (which I do like) don't have the back windows really open, but only pop a bit (whatever the correct terminology is). Saw a model that has the back windows slide/open halfway, which is great - both for the dog and for passengers. This model also has the sunroof that really opens, which is another bonus. Yet, it does not exist in the crystal roof version.

Is it all correct, or am I missing a model that is the ideal world - back windows that open, crystal roof, and a sunroof that actually opens? Alternatively, if I get a crystal roof option, can I replace the windows with something that opens?

Thanks,
Simon

Hit and miss with the sliding windows on the crystal roofs.

They usually come on low roofs and pre 91's, however there are so many options/configurations that they are all over the place.

Yep. Mardy is Amazing Auto.

Happy hunting ! :M

Unless I misunderstood what someone was posting here on the forum, one could replace the rear pop-out windows with sliding windows. Dilemma solved!

We have a crystalite exceed with sliders on all windows except the rear window behind the sliding door (so my kids don't lose an arm by sticking it out the window when someone opens the door). That's the way they come from the factory if you have sliders - on 2 or 3 windows, but not 4.

I got mine through Japanoid, but if you're patient you can get one through most dealers. It's really hit and miss, depending on what their people in Japan find. We lucked out.

One note: usually most of the liners on the slider windows are dried and cracked. Some replace them, lots do not (I haven't yet, as it's not a leak issue). But if you do, each liner is about $90 per window, for just the part (according to Japanoid).

Thank you - this is what I am looking for (I think). Does "crystalite" means higher roof with the crystal roof windows?

Thanks for this one - though Japanoid people told me it won't work because of the different windows size. Do you know who could do it (because it would be the ideal situation for me then - get the crystal roof and replace 2 windows with sliding ones)?

Thanks,
Simon

Any glass shop will do it.

You just have to source the sliding windows, clips, seals.

Same window size. Pop-outs can be replaced fairly easily with sliders, but sliders cannot be replaced as easily with pop outs (you can read about it here: http://www.delica.ca/forum/pop-out-wind ... tml#p21654). So you can't really trade your pop-outs with another owner's sliders.
