Wells Gray Provincial Park...???

Post by piyeguyo »

Hi

Just wondering if anybody's been to this park: Wells Gray Provincial Park, BC. I'm considering going here for the Sept 1rst long weekend with my family. (4-5 days)

Any info + suggestions would be appreciated.

I've driven through there a couple of times - absolutely stunning scenery! You've got nothing like it in Alberta. Seriously.

That being said, I've not stopped at the campsite itself (was on my way to Jasper). But I have walked about the waterfall, and I've stopped in the mountain meadow for a walkabout. Would have loved to climbed the peaks, but that would have taken longer than I had time.

I think a couple others of us have gone through this area - maybe they'll pipe up next.

Stop at the Info center in Clearwater, it's a non-goverment tourist center. They are quite nice. Drive up from Clearwater, take the first right after the Spahat falls (on to grave), turn right well up the hill before Trophy meadows (which is after the bear creek correction center- which is on the right on your way up), before the bridge you'll see a road to the right noting the Silvertip falls rec site. I'm traveling and am on dial up right now, so I can't look up the names of some nice day hikes we've done.

There's pictures of that sweet campsite in my Photo albuim on this site, and the hike to the falls is easy. About 1km hike.

Cheers

I worked as a raft guide on the clearwater river, which is in wells grey park, for several years.
If you can shell out the bucks the river run is one of the best in BC, however the water will be on the low side just now.
For some out of the way camping go up the river road on the south side of the park, it goes up about 40 K and ends at a washout on the Mahood river, there is a trail that goes up to Mahood lake, only about an hour to get there (the hike). Awesome camping at Kilometer 28 and great views of Sabretooth and Kettle drops on the drive up.
The otherside of the river has great access to lots of waterfalls. If you're willing to hike down to the base of Spahats and Grouse falls you'll be able to walk behind them at this time of year.
Trophy meadows is also worth the hike - endless alpine flowers.
If you're canoeing anywhere on the river be aware of what is downstream before you explore - that last step is a doozy.
The Clearwater / Azure lake chain has lots of camping that is canoe accessable and is worth the effort.
In short, there is lots to do and see, a short visit will only mean you'll have to return and see more.
I usually do an annual trip up there on labour day to catch with local cronies and kayak the river for a few days and hit the Thompson river on the way home.
Great place.
