ARB differential air locker

I just picked up a second one in WA over the weekend.

Went down to north bend (did some archery) and came back the next day with the whole assembly, gears and compressor.

It's a direct bolt on 3rd member. All the shop work has been done.

His total cost was $950 for the locker, $630 for the shop time and $120 for the compressor, fittings and switches.

I couldn't pass it up for the deal I got on it.

Would like to pass over the good savings. Just what I paid for it.

Anyone who goes off the beaten path and needs 'safe and controllable' traction, or would like an alternative to a winch, you don't have to look further.

Not in a Delica but in many, many Montero's.

You'd need to source a 88-95 V6 Montero front carrier (they are larger 8" compared to our/older Montero 7.25" front diff) to fit the RD110 air locker.

You'll need the carrier, gears and axles. Can be sourced from a wrecker or parts Montero as they are very common.

That's my long term plan. Lock the front and rear.

When I bought the delica my other choice was going to be a mercedes g-wagon with factory diff-locks... woulda been unstoppable off-road, but in the end I opted for a vehicle I could sleep inside instead. And I haven't regretted it for a minute.
If I could have a vehicle for every occasion though....

air lockers would be wonderful, but at the cost, and the likelihood of me actually needing them... probably just a dream for me. too many other things need my money.

Locker is on hold.

As for the cost.

It's relative to each person.

99% of the time when you get stuck off road and need someone to pull you out or winch yourself out, have a locked drivetrain will get you out yourself.

That to me, is worth the added cost.

When I'm out off the beaten path with my family driving alone, I don't want to think about getting stuck, let alone getting stuck and having no one to assist in extraction.

I also know what it's like having the convenience of a vehicle that can go through/over obstacles or rough terrain with locked axles while watching monster off road vehicles get stuck in places that just look like a little puddle on a logging road.

For me, it comes down to safety and convenience.

I also prefer to cross/go through a section on the Delica's own power and grip as opposed to getting stuck and having to winch myself out.

Hence the reason for lockers instead of a winch. Preventative offroading.

So we were out on some ugly west coast rocks. We were locked up front and rear, one rear wheel wedged between two rocks, both front wheels looking straight at the face of two 0.5 m tall boulders, and the other rear free to spin. What a great way to test the lockers. And here’s where the slippery slope of upgrades gets you:

The 100+ Hp trying to move 5000+ lbs of aluminum and steel, well wedged in just couldn’t do it. We either stalled out or slipped the clutch. If the cluth had engaged there would have been little control as the speed over the obstacle would be too high. More power? Lower gearing? Both?? All the traction in the world just doesn’t help when you don’t have the power plant to move it! But that’s another upgrade on another budget, in a land very far away from here…

I’ll be adding some photos of the axles and actuators shortly.

Oh it will move the wheels just fine, trust me.

If it slips in 4H, just toss it into 4L and it will crawl out.

It's the low ratio and diesel engines that make these puppies fun for slow wheelin'.

We have 4.88's and 5.29's. Combined with the tcase gearing and low compression 4D56T, it's a perfect combo.

The Montero/Pajero's come with factory Mitsu air locking rear diffs and they work flawlessly.

Gearing, tires and AUW are the culprits in his case.

That guy is also running 4.10's and almost double the load rating for that cruiser. Most likely he would sink before he could push out of deep mud with that gear set.

seems to me that HP has little to do with trying to pull a deli out of a stuck spot, torque would be more important, HP will just make you spin your tires.

On the topic of locking the front diff would it be possible for an L400 super exceed 94?
I'm in the process of replacing my front diff due to a small amount of abuse it recieved this last weekend.
If I were to replace it with a Montero front diff to suit the RD110 locker would it change the gear ratio or is the 8" an outside dimension?
