Acetone as Diesel Additive

Post by sasquatch-hunter »

Hi everyone,

My friend drove his Dodge Ram diesel down from the north. He used Acetone (about 2 oz. per tank) and said to have great improvement on mileage. Has anyone tried this in Delica? Here is a link with all info:

cheers,

I've been wanting to try Acetone in my WVO tank to help thin it out a bit, but I haven't found a good place to purchase it. I've been using Kleen-Flo Diesel additive but I'm not sure if it has a similar effect or not. Kleen-Flo is supposed to clean your injectors and act as a diesel anti-gel.

I already posted about fuel saving using Acetone, can't remember which post but I had got the initial info from the Aussi site. Worth to check it again on the aussi site as they had the proper ratio and actual fuel savings plus all the pros and cons (not any really)...

Just make sure you use proper chemical gloves etc. as Acetone is absorbed easily into your system.

The recommended amount of acetone is around 1.5ml per litre of diesel.

jfarsang is right. If you look at the graph in the link, diesel gain in maximum with 1.5 ml per liter. So, for a full tank of 75 liters, you will need 112.5 ml of acetone.

Adam, why not try thining out your WVO with stove oil. I have access to a fuel testing company and I get all of their stove , diesel and jet fuel samples from time to time. I run it in my 7.3 diesel engine. And as far as "anti gel", any fuel company up north will have started changing their diesel properties over to meet Winter Grade specs, so by mid November they are at a -45 pour point All they are doing is adding stove oil to the diesel gradually. If my memory is still with me ( after delivering countless amounts of fuel to the island, I miss those brain cells ) Nanaimo is running -12c pour point diesel. The northern regions are running an 80/20 blend of stove oil to diesel in mid winter. This stops the paraffin suspended in the diesel from freezing. The flash point changes as well by adding Stove. 39c for Stove ,and generally 52c for road diesel.

About the only thing I can think of that could prevent you from doing this is stratification. You may want tro try a blend of WVO at operating temp with some stove in a seperate container ( bench blend). The drawback is if you add heat, you end up cooking off the "Light Ends" of the additive. I'll give the fuel company a call and see if anyone there knows anything about compatabilty. With Bio Diesel in the market know , they may have some info that is uselful.
