Wierd Suspension Noise: Solved

Post by JMK »

You'l recall previous posts about a noise coming from the rear when the vehicle would move over irregular ground while cornering or taking a lateral force. A few people have mentioned it. A mechanic friend of mine said it was the forward bracket of the rear leaf springs, and that the leaf was grinding on the side of the bracket. He said I'd have to disconnect the spring and bend the bracket outward. I finally crawled under to put some lithium grease on it, and lo and behold I find a small rock about the size of a garbanzo bean wedged in there that I had not noticed before. So I pried it out with a screwdriver and applied the grease anyway for good measure.

Well this has got to be one of the happiest fixes I've ever accomplished because that was the end of the grinding noises, must have been that rock. The noise started on the West Coast of Vancouver Island in late August, and I've been living with it since that time, kind of like Chinese Water Torture.

So I've read a number of posts hinting to having the same sort of weird and hard to diagnose noise. So the morale of this story is obvious, look in the recesses of the spring mounts for pea gravel wedged in there before you do anything else!
