Bad vibes from the pajero!!

Post by bae146 »

I seam to have developed some bad vibes in the pajero lately. It is a gen 2 shorty with a manual trasmission. I have replaced the rear u joints, had the driveshaft balanced, to no avail. I do have some play in the driveshaft where the slip splines enter the transfer case. I get about 1/16th of an inch play up and down and side to side. If it is not to cold out wherever you may happen to live or you have a garage can someone check and see what they have for play in this area? It would be greatly appreciated. I have checked inside the splines and don't see any wear on the slip splines. I have heard that there is a bushing in the tail shaft housing that can wear out, but I only have 115,000 kms on it. The tires have all been rebalanced, I have pulled the drive flanges off the front cv shafts, but still no joy. I ahve also pulled the rear 3rd member out and checked the gears for backlash, and runout. Also checked the rear wheel bearings when it was all apart. Front wheel bearings are new. Anything I have overlooked? :?

did you check engine mounts and driveline mounts/bushings

when does it happen??

specific speed or gear?
accelerating?
braking?

Yes I checked all the mounts they are good. I can feel the vibes from 40 kph and up. Worst at 90 kph, smooths out a bit above 120. Accelerating and braking make little difference.

It is a harmonic thrumming sound. But tie rods are good. No feeling of vibration in the steering wheel either.

Hello,

Sounds like an anoying problem to be sure!

You seem to have eliminated many of the possible culprits which is good.
You can see on other threads that often your engine/driveline mounts may look good but may actually be pretty tired. 15 years is longr than I have got out of any rubber device. (On or off my Vehicles)

The prices I have seen on mounts are not cheap but certainly easier than pulling driveline items apart.

I definetly have some sucky vibrations through my RPM range and will most probably replace my mounts in the spring maybe balance the shaft and do U joints , not particularily looking forward to it but it will give me a chance to do some other stuff on my Deli's belly.

Keep us posted with what you find out and good luck!

Right on 8-)

Also at some point jfarsang or some other human-mitsu-wiki will throw some knowledge here its just a matter of time! :-D

i checked for play at my slip yoke in the t case..... i'd say like 1mm of play (if that) but there should be a hair of play for sure......

definitely sounds like a drive shaft issue... can you feel the vibration in the T-case Shifter?

do you have a suspension lift?? the angle of the u joint at the t case has to match the angle at diff u joint

or this is a long shot but could one of the tires have a flat spot or bulge from sitting too long or lighting up the brakes? (probable one of the rears if any... cuz you can't feel it in the wheel)

I have no lift, I have swapped tires front to rear and no change. I cannot feel anything in the shifter for the transfercase. I guess I need to find a shop with a set of rollers that I can run the truck on with the weight on the wheels and inspect while it is running. I have put it up on jack stands in the garage and put it in gear, had it up to 80 kph and did note some vibration at the output shaft on the t-case. However funny part is when I change the shock setting from firm to soft the vibration felt is lessened, so that would mean to me that the vibration is coming from the axle not the driveshaft.....

I see you own the same truck as I do. Do you want to give me you slip yoke and tailshaft? I will post up how I repair this. I will get 2 bushings if I need to have them made. This way the next guy who has this problem will be able to solve it easily. I am sure a good machine shop can make a set. Unless Mardy of course fixes me up with some parts!!!!!
