A couple quick questions...
1) is there actually enough room for the seatbelt and glow plug controller in that door pillar now?
2) why did you move the air filter? it would seem it should still be able to sit in the same spot it was...

Hmm. Did I say that I did it? This is pure Russian style and below is the driver and his ride before modification. He did not provide any info other than that he removed ECU and a/c pipes. Give me the full list of questions and I will try to get answers. So far it looks like a brilliant budget idea.

Here is another one: this fellow did not even use a pipe, he just connected the air intake to the pillar cavity and sealed the joint.
As you can see your creativity goes almost through the roof if your project funding is limited.

I was thinking a short pipe stack in the van behind the drivers seat and a valve (cable or electrically operated if you want to get fancy) to switch between regular operation and snorkel, with the snorkel inside you would have to get so deep and for long enough that your head was under water before you got water into the engine. You might want to crack a window or the sunroof but other than that it should be cheap, easy and effective :)

Is a good idea but I'd say that if you wanted to fit one like that the louvers would need to be turned through 90 degrees so that there is more of a ram effect forcing the air in.

Or you could fit the top of a snorkel into the side so that it faces the right way which would look good if you could get it tight enough to the body.

Pretty slick mod.

Similar to the factory design of the VW Syncro that was housed inside the body up to near the roof line. The Syncro snorkel also had provisions to filter out crap before the main filter and to let any water it did take in from rain/washing to exit.

I like it...! Looks much more elegant than a plastic trunk going up on the side of the Van...

But hey, why not go straight out through the roof with the louvered intake facing in the oncoming wind.... talk about a ram-effect.... you would probably almost get a PSI or so of pressure there without the turbo turbining when going at a decent speed...

Or better yet... connect a Y-intersector with one nozzle to the intake to the inner air-duct of the venting system... when running the air conditioner, you could blow super cold air right down into that air filter....

About the guy who simply connected the intake to the pillar cavity.... would you have to expect excessive intake noise - potentially even turbo whining inside the cab?

Not that I would want to make the inside of the van any noisier... at a hwy speed of around 100km/h it is already noisy enough for my taste...

Almac and Impalator, You guys don't like the 'traditional' snorkels with the black pipe going up the side?
My friend has one and he also says the L300 is different to 'other' 4wds because the snorkels on others come from the front of the vehicle but the L300 ones come out behind the drivers seat which blocks some of the rear view in the right hand mirror.
And some of you are skeptical of these home made 'inside' pillar snorkel mods?
How about this one then?
It's like the inside pillar one but instead on the outside and isn't really noticeable...
