Hi, curious how easy it is to replace the carrier bearing by yourself. Trying to keep the cost down as I have a quote of $175 for the bearing alone...

diff carrier bearings ?

It's a heck of a job. I'm doing mine in 2 weeks.

Not the diff carrier bearing.

The one along the driveline between the trans and the rear axle.

You mean the pinion seal.

Nope, but that looks as though it may be leaking so i'll have to look into that area further...

Maybe on the delica its a straight shaft from the diff to the rear axle. on the strada its a 2 piece setup with a horizontal shaft out of the diff supported by a 'carrier' bearing and connected to the 2nd shaft angled down to the rear axle.

if I could find my girlfriends camera, I would take a picture but shes gone till sunday and pretty sure she took it with her.

any new thoughts??

What year is it ?

It should be a solid axle in the rear.

If you have a floating axle (normally on the front) take some pics.

I'm thinking it is a 2 piece drive shaft? not the axle? and he is talking about the hanger in the middle?

Haven't seen one of those for a while.

You may have to have the bearing pressed off/on by a shop.

It's a high load bearing so the cost is normal.

anybody know for sure if I have to press the bearing or not??

It's not really hard to change.I have change the driveshaft carrier on the strada of my cousin.
Don't need a press.Just a good Cutwheel,grinder.Remove the driveshaft.Separate the center joint.
Remove the big nut on the middle yoke.Mark the position of the yoke with the driveshaft.remove the yoke.Maybe you will need a hammer,but be gentle.You're at the carrier.It's possible to remove it by hand if not too rusty.If not,try the hammer,gently
If not,cut it,slowly but surely with the grinder or cutwheel.Remove the carrier,install the new
one.Install the yoke on the driveshaft,align with the mark that you made before.Tighten the big
nut.I think it 's around 70-85 lbs-ft.Lock the nut with a center punch and a hammer.Punch the upper edge of the nut.Re-install is the reverse of above.It's the time to also check your joints.
Make sure they are not stuck or loose.

FYI,

I was able to source the North American part from a 1992 mighty max. I got it for a great price too, and it fit perfectly.
Unfortunately I had to get it done at a local shop since I don't have a few of the tools necessary for the job and I didn't want to get into a predicament where the truck was immobile for a few days, expecially with my girlfriend having some major 4th yr. exams as I write this.
