transmission problems !?!

Post by alec »

hi there,
thought i would ask the community about a transmission problem i encountered last night.

i drive a 90 delica exceed auto.
after coming down from garibaldi park for a bike ride - really big up and down on a crappy road - i noticed that my engine was not engaging properly. when i got down the hill i pulled over to let it cool down.

after about 10minutes of waiting i was able to get the van running smoothly - but then it started again. i checked the transmission fluid level (i'm assuming it's the lower of the two pull out checkers - below the oil one) and filled up my coolant level. the collant level was low - but not quite empty. i'm really hoping that i did not run the engine dry of it !!!

anyways i'm having it looked at tomorrow because now the engine sounds a bit off...

anyone have any ideas - i'm hoping that there isn't a leak somewhere in there :o

i'll keep you posted.

To check your tranny oil it's the larger of the 2 tubes (the upper one?) and you need to check it with the engine running.

update:

there was the right amount of transmission fluid (the lower markers on the rod when you run it just after start up). however, the fluid did smell a bit burnt - ouchie!

please cross your fingers for me :-(

Hey alec,
I've just been through the same thing. I ended up replacing my transmission with a used one. Parts and labour were only $800. If you decide/need to go this route, feel free to PM me for details.

I was told by many to change my ATF then try it again. I did, and it didn't help - but if your ATF fluid smells burnt, it just might do the trick - probably wishful thinking, but worth a shot.

Here is the link to my thread

Good luck.

Flush the tranny, replace the ATF and the filter. Butch at CVI did it for me. Mine is almost pink again. The ATF, that is. It doesn't cost much and it might save you bigger bucks.

hey there again,
thanks for the advice and support.

it looks like the pump failed in the transmission - or it's leaking inside. either way the pump isn't building enough pressure when the oil heats up.

japanoid has been very understanding and has offered me a great deal to have the van repaired - thanks very much guys.

i can't wait to have her back!

Did you get a second opinion/estimate too (Mardy, CVI, Glen...)? Haven't heard good stories about Japanoid recently...

yup i did and mardy was super duper nice as always.
the price japanoid gave me was similar to mardy's - but they included labour into the cost.

the local mechanic up in squish is also very good - and his estimate was much higher too.

thanks for the heads up though.
