How to water-proof your Delica? (for deep water crossings)

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

How to water-proof your Delica? (for deep water crossings)

Post by maw »

Does anyone know what needs to be done to water-proof the Delica for deep water crossings? I am new to diesel engines but I hear that they are more water friendly than gas. Some concerns I have about door depth water crossings:

- To be safe, probably need a snorkel. http://www.delica.ca/forum/snorkel-with ... -4720.html (I am considering this)
- What about the "ramp" under the front end which would act as a funnel for debris and water right into the radiator. Is this easily solved with the skidplates advertised by fishslapper? (http://www.delica.ca/forum/new-batch-of ... -4701.html)
- Is there any risk to the fan (bending or breaking)?
- I know there are two AC units on the Delica, are these sealed?
- Is there any exposed electrical that could cause a problem if it is submerged?
- Do the doors leak if the water gets up that high? I don't mean through the window, but the sealing below and up to window height.
- Other than the rear differential... are there any other breathers that would take on water which would require a fluid change after being submerged?

One area that you have over-looked is the timing belt which would be quite a job to seal up properly.
I wouldn't (read: I don't) worry about it if i will be the occasional crossing but this one factor is quite limiting if you are considering extensive water crossings. There is a section of the manual that covers maintenance before and after water crossings. Mostly grease points but also sealing boots on cvs, steering etc.

And yes the door seals do leak.

The rear is pretty straight forward, but the front has a valve on it. Did you replaced the valve with a different fitting?

Sorry I though you meant the rear.

The valve on the front is odd. It's a one way plastic valve that is capped with a brass flap within in a rubber sleeve and it's just plugged into the diff housing. I found that it can seep water so it's not 100% one-way for air/water.

I pulled it out and drilled out the little hole to 8mm and tapped it. Then put in a barbed fitting with telfon tape and 6mm tube from there up the firewall.
