Only difference between 91 - 98 Pajero's is between the 2.5 (91-98) and the 2.8 (94-98).

2.8's have a 1.5" factory body lift to clear the higher positioned trans/tcase.

They also have more power compared to the 2.5 which an upside but the fuel economy is a bit lower.

Vehicle is the same inside/out.

Cost is a lot higher for the 2.8 as well.

Do you need more power than the 2.5 ?

If so, you're looking at $2-3,000 more for that.

Otherwise they are identical.

Parts availability is excellent for the whole truck aside from the engine.

92-98 Mitsubishi Montero (north American) equivalent

2.5 engine parts support is huge since this engine was used by ford/Chevrolet for their mid-sized trucks in the early to late 80's

2.8 engine parts supply is not as good as this engine was never offered in north America

I just bought my 92 J-Top about a month ago and really love the truck. It has the 2.5, which I too was concerned about, but there are way more parts for it, at least for now. Power seems fine to me, and once I get it back from it's tune up and injector clean i'm sure i'll be very happy. I paid $7600, and insurance was reasonable. I find my fuel economy to be pretty good, roughly 10K/L...till my foot gets heavy. I was considering a Jeep but really wanted diesel and the Pajero's fuel economy seemed much better.
