Attempted break in, left with metal in lock, advice?

OK so went down to the pub for a beer and when i came out it looked as though my lock had been rotated clockwise. suspicious, I took my keys and tried to get them into the lock. no dice. went to a shop and he had a quick look in the lock and said he saw what appeared to be a piece of a knife, the end of a scissor, or some other sharp metal object. I was told they would need to remove door panel to get the lock out and either get the metal out, or replace the lock.

Can anyone fill me in on the potential scope of work involved with pulling off a door panel and removing a lock? I am driving to grande prairie on wednesday for work and need to have this resolved asap!

I am also putting in a mental call to the karma police, kindly requesting that these assholes who tried to break into my house (ive been living in my van a lot lately) get what's coming to them!

Hey Chris, I can't offer much insight into pulling door panels(without damaging the plastic trees that hold the panels in place), but try using a magnetic screwdriver or if that's not strong enough stick a strong fridge magnet on the screwdriver as close to the end as possible and see if you can pull whatever's in there out.

good idea, maybe i can rig something up, will try that first before prying off panels.

It took me 15 minutes to remove the panel and the lock when I was replacing the central lock micro switch. Not a big job at all.

Hi Chris, Where are You located right now? If you can swing by Burnaby, Jay can take a look. Otherwise, I would go to a proper locksmith (not just a key cutting place) ie a place that repairs locks and safes, they have lots of experience with broken off keys in locks. Cheers, Christine.

Alright got door panel off without much hassle, only 2 of the plastic trees didnt pop out with the panel. took lock to the lock guys and they have made it work temporarily but it will need to be replaced. called the crew at mustang connection in armstrong (i am in penticton) and they have one on the bus as we speak, penticton bound! will have lock re-keyed and im back in business!

When you say "plastic trees" you mean the rivets, right? The white plastic thingies that hold the inside panel in place?

Sh!tty. The little fackers did the same thing to my bike. They broke off a piece of scissors in the ignition lock. My suspision was that they wanted to disable my bike so that I would leave it and they could come back for it later that night. I should have done a stakeout with some big friends and beat the crap out of them. Hindsight 20/20

Anyways, I had to pull the lock apart to get the scissor bit out but fortunately the lock was not damaged so bad and it kept working. That saved me a couple of hundred bucks for a new lock.
