Amsoil dual bypass oil filter installed on L400... finally!

Post by Drumster »

Yes! I finally have my Amsoil dual bypass oil filter system installed.

In order to fit the two headed monster under the hood I first had to make more room by removing the stock air box and replacing with a K&N Apollo cold air intake.
Image

Here's what the K&N looks like installed (mine's black, not chrome). It came with a flexible alloy hose which fits nicely into the stock duct inside fender. Also used some silicone adapters to mount to stock intake.

Here's the Amsoil adapter unit which fits where the stock oil filter used to go.
Image

As Amsoil doesn't make an adapter in our Deli size, I bought the 20mm one and had it drilled & tapped out by a helpful Delica.ca (Canada) forum member who Iwas fortunate enough to meet. He did the machine work for me at a very reasonable cost with this drill & tap I bought on eBay.

Here's what the adapter looks like under the van where the stock spin on filter normally resides.

Unit mounted under hood with the help of a piece of aluminum angle bar from Can Tire.

Hey, Nice job! I especially like the new airfilter as it leaves so much room in the engine bay.

How much do new filters cost for that setup? Does it work out to be less expensive?

Looks like the attachment fitting you put on reduces the clearance of the original oil filter - which is perfect as it is such a dangerous spot to get hit by a rock! A job well done I say!

Thanks! Yeah, I'm very happy with it. :-D

I'm also pleased that nothing I've done to Yoda has added any holes or is in any way irreversible. It can all be returned to stock very easily and I can re-install any of this stuff on a different vehicle if ever I want or need to. Having said that, I intend to keep this van for a long time, which is really why I've put in the bypass filter system along with synthetic oil & removed the EGR valve and why I installed waterless coolant etc... all with an eye to increased engine life. Also, I feel it's worth it for anyone to go out of their way to buy the best condition, lowest mileage JDM they can get their hands on to start with and then do everything they can to extend its life... we never know how far things will go with the slime-balls from CADA and elsewhere. We shouldn't take anything for granted, IMO. :-(

Anyway, as for cost, I signed on as a "preferred customer" with Amsoil to get a bit of a discount. The by-pass filter cost $36.85 and is said to be good for up to a max of 60,000 miles, as is the oil itself (although evidently some people go much further. In fact, some people claim oil never actually breaks down and if you clean it well enough it could go on indefinitely. I don't know about that one way or the other but it's an interesting concept). 8-)

The recommended Amsoil high flow filter I'm using with the system is also pretty high quality and will need to be changed at the half way mark, at most. Those are about $21. So I'm guessing 50 - 60,000 for the fine filter & oil and 25 -30,000 for the hi-flow filter. Not bad in my books, especially considering the overall increased longevity I should get out of the motor.

Next up: an "X-kote" exterior treatment http://www.x-kote.com/index.htm
and then Amsoil synthetic tranny fluid. That'll be all before my little road trip in Sept.
I'm here to learn.

What did you do with the PCV tube? I've got mine going to a air/oil separator can right now, but I'm thinking that's not going to be need (or won't fit) once I put in the K&N cold air filter kit.

I have the same setup as Drumster's with a Provent 200 added and I do not return the PCV line back to the K&N air box. You can fit it with a couple of reducers but I found this pointless.

So, just put a filter trap (so it doesn't dribble oil all over the ground) on it and call it done?

Keep the K&N oiled or it will actually reduce the engine life and be very careful if you do any deep water fords....Cold air intakes are really good at drinking puddles!!!

Low mileage is not always a good thing on a 15 year old engine it can be the sign of an engine that never warmed up enough. I had a F350 work truck with a 460 with only 80,000km on it 20 years old and drank 2L oil for every tank due to rings never seating properly...

Great addition, this is the route the big litre (13and up) diesels in highway trucks are starting to be aware of, the savings are unreal when they can go up to 100,00 miles or more before changing oil, syn oil is supposed to be that much better as well :-D
