We met a couple from Switzerland on our road trip to Inuvik with a camperized version and pop-top. Nice vehicle, but just look at the amount of jerry cans around the body :)

Re: Who was looking for a Pinzgauer, After oil or..?
I was looking for one, or rather for a Volvo C303. But I have been holding off for a few reasons for now. That one on craigslist has been on for awhile, and there was recently one in victoria for sale as well. It might be a decent price depending on the condition. They tend to be way rougher than the Delica' just due to being 25+ years old. And of course maintenance is a whole other ballpark.
One day I will own a 6x6 volvo though... but for now I am working on getting back in a Delica.

I was just going to type that someone in Victoria's been selling one for the last year or so - probably asking too much on the basis of its uniqueness. I can look at the sticker if you like (it's just up the road from where I work).
And they're not that bad on fuel - that Swiss couple are probably just being overly cautious.

Great if not perfet platform and size for an expedition vehicle but old technology, very slow, very loud and yup, seems like a thirsty one. Nice and unique though, especially the one posted by Felix...
Cheers.

Re: Who was looking for a Pinzgauer, After oil or..?
Speaking of Pinzgauer... that is me in my young days in the Swiss Army...

I was assigned a Pinzgauer 4x4 for my first term - which would clearly be the favorable option over a 6x6 as the motor is the same (2.5 L 4 cyl, aircooled, 90hp)... but the 6x6 drivetrain and added weight suck up a lot more power than the 4x4 and I believe the 6x6 off-road capability is only slightly better.
However, I'd never wanted a Pinzgauer for an everyday ride... they are not very userfriendly, suck up huge amounts of gas (up to 18 Liters for 100kms) and reach a top speed south of 100km/h when aggressively flooring it. Also, due to being aircooled, with no catalytic converter and fuel injection they are major polluters and they need premium (lead-containing or lead substitued gas of 95 Octane or higher) ... I think a Deli is a much better option and offers power steering, air condition, power windows, sliding doors, comfortable seats, a considerably better fuel mileage and (at least as far as the L300 is concerned) just as unique (and probably better) a look....
Anyway... they are cool but then they are not really that cool after all...

I personally like the volvo c306 or TGB13, they have a 6 cyl liqid cooled engine. Still thirsty, but a little quicker and quieter than the pinzgauer. Of course the pinz has a wider availability of parts. Here is a great expedition build on a volvo platform. http://www.trog.us/category/trog/page/2/

Don't mean to derail the thread but what kind of firearm is that you're holding? A friend of mine has owned a Sig 550 for a couple of years and it's a beautiful rifle. I love Swiss firearms.impalator wrote:Speaking of Pinzgauer... that is me in my young days in the Swiss Army...

That's not me in the picture BTW, it's some dude who went with him shooting in Alberta just a couple of weeks ago. Anyways, that's his rifle.

@impalator: I see you're wearing the always-favoured 'poopy suit' - the sure-it'll-save-your-ass-at-the-end-of-the-world nuclear, biological and chemical defense garment or NBCD garment. How many hours of your life did you spend wrapped in it's activated-charcoal embrace?

Re: Who was looking for a Pinzgauer, After oil or..?
@Jensen: It's the predecessor of the 550 (which in the Swiss Army is called StGw90, or "Sturmgewehr 90" [Assault Rifle 90] as it was introduced into the army in 1990).
The one I am holding is the StGw57 (Sturmgewehr 57, introduced in 1957) and is the version issued in Switzerland prior to the 1990 version. As I served in the air-defence, although I joined the force in 1990, we were last to get the 90 and I served my entire term with the 57... Sad thing is: The Swiss Army hands over the personal firearm to each soldier as a personal possession to keep at the end of their full term. Due to me leaving for Canada prior to completing all my reserve terms (a few weeks each year until you're 38 years of age) I could not claim it and therefore did not get mine. The StGw 57 is a super accurate assault rifle - and by various experts considered to be the most well built, precise and accurate service rifle ever issued to an army... However, unloaded it weighs 5.7 kg's (another analogy to StGw 57) and is a pretty heavy beast.... the 550 with the plastic stock is much lighter and just as accurate if not more so...
PS: Jensen... regarding the blanking/blocking plates... P.M. sent
@Mararmeisto: Yes, I had to wear that sucker much more often and longer than I care to remember... we even had to do marches with the suit, rubber gloves and bulky over-boots over regular boots, gas-mask and helmet on... sweat and water condensation accumulating inside the mask... some guys actually collapsed... talk about winning the war wearing such a thing... what worked to my benefit was the fact that I was assigned a vehicle and had completed a full off road drivers course on unimogs, jeeps (Kaiser), and Pinzgauers as well as Puch 230 (Mercedes Offroad vehicle) and as a driver on duty you were exempt (during peace-time) from wearing the gas mask... wheheww!
I actually just recently came across an interesting you-tube link about the "secret" army fortresses of the Swiss Army, built after WW2 and during the cold war... many of these things are now no longer in use or some of them have turned into museums and even a hotel... but if you like that kind of stuff, it's quite interesting (although the clip is in french, it is pretty much self explanatory even for non french-speakers)...

Now I really derailed this thread... wasn't it supposed to be all about the Pinzgauer?

This ought to bring it back on the tracks.
As for you not getting your weapon at the end of your service that's a shame. That 550 my buddy has cost almost half what my Delica did, not a bad parting gift!
