How do you use your Delica?

4x4 trips to Mexico, to the ski hill, or to the local grocery store...

How do you use your Delica?

Post by BCDelica »

Howdy,

Now that we have started to see some growth since this summer, how about we share brief posts of what we do in our Delica's (keep it clean ). We are getting a great diversity of members here, and personally as a six day a week working dude with 3 kids (one in collage!), I would love to see some action shots from the surfer and kiteboarders!! 8)

Kev - want's to see more pics of the Delica around BC!

overland travel

Post by lost1 »

As a semi-(read reluctantantly) retired international overland traveller (mostly by motorcycle), I have just started with my young family and use my delica for travelling. Crossed Canada from coast to coast and will be leaving next month from Quebec to Mexico (maybe Guatemala too). I have just fabricated, yesterday, what could possibly be the biggest safari roof rack, for a Delica, known to man. Sorry no pics yet...

snow? what are you taking about.. that light dusting you guys have is nothing! ;) and I can't say I'm enjoying the temperature either...

good pic of the delica though... the bull-bar looks a little different though... custom work? (it looks to me like the lower rectangular frame has been moved up to cover the headlights?)

That light dusting was about 3 cm at sea level, and this pic was at about 1000 meters plus. Yes those are chains on, but it hardly slipped. Tomorrow will be 20c and sunny, 8) don't worry.

Those bull bar 'wings' are add-ons that came with the van. Darn glad the wifes van has posi, my work van doesn't, I didn't know it was rare.

today is -22c... as the high! tomorrow is supposed to get to a high of a balmy -25c .... and it's been like this for a few days... and have a few more yet scheduled...

and to be perfectly honest... the snow in the picture there doesn't look that far off what we have in town here.... difference being the roads here have been plowed...

as for posi-traction... don't know if I'll have it or not... but if I don't... well I've never had it on a vehicle before, so I guess no big loss...

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr !! (I have done time in Cowtown  )

Its -1 here right now, and it's called the Sunshine coast.

That's a deactivated logging road, no plows. It was cool - I was the only car that made it up to the top, only quads made it as far!!

I use my Delica as my daily driver, commuting from one corner of Calgary to the other.
We also took 3 camping trips this summer, sleeping inside the van. With all the rear seats folded down it fits a queen size airbed plus room at the back for a crib mattress for my toddler. We stuffed an old sleeping bag in the dip that the rear bench has when folded down to level it out. Dog slept in the front passenger seat on his dog bed. Quite comfortable, although any movement on one side of the airbed sends the person on the other side bouncing around.

Without a roofrack it was tricky fitting in gear for several days of camping with a toddler. I ended up folding up the rear bench and installing a baby seat anchor through the back wall of the engine compartment so he could sit up front with me. He liked it a lot, and had a few double takes from other drivers when they saw a 2-year-old sitting where they would expect the driver to be.

Lost1 you may have some competition for biggest rack ( sorry Kev, I tried to keep it clean!) My new van has one almost the length of the van.

To post a photo you'll need it to be accessible via a web address somehow. My ISP gives me webspace that I can upload photos to, or you could set up an account with flickr or photobox. Also a good idea to make sure your photo is small enough to fit on the screen without having to scroll around to see the whole thing. After you are able to bring up your pics using a web address, post it by clicking the Img button on the window where you compose your message, cut/paste or type in the web address of your photo, then click the Img button again. Click the preview button to be sure it worked ok before hitting submit. After done, the line in your post should look something like this:

Code: Select all

Hope that works for you!

ok Jon... I bite, which Delica are you? I see a blue one commuting accross town on 14th St frequently, and I've spotted a white one once now... I hear there are a total of approximately 5 in calgary now... (though I've only seen the 2)

Once I get mine we should meet up some time for coffee or something!

rackin my brains

Post by lost1 »

my rack is 114 inches X 50 inches. That almost merits Delica nasty-star status (as far as racks go)

Hi Kev,

Mine is used as a true multi-purpose motor!

Here are some pics that sum up what I use it for (quite a few in fact! Sorry!!! :? :

Image
Carrying stuff - anything from trees to tyres to big loads of stainless steel etc...

Image
Carrying my bikes around - either my BMX show bikes or our mountain bikes if we ever head off to the hills/forest etc....we mainly take the mountain bikes although I've never got around to taking a photo of them on the motor!

Image
Lugging friends and family around! Airport runs, day trips or in this case, a 4 day walking trip in Exmoor...I carried 7 people (inc myself!) and all their walking gear and all the booze! :D

Image
Sleeping in it! Air mattress at the ready, a VERY comfy nights sleep... 8) Good for breakfast in bed too

Image
Often wake up to a nice view in the morning! (small pic doesn't do the scenery justice! :? )

Image
Getting wet! Ford bashing always fun....

Image
...especially in deeper fords! This particular water foray saw the Deli go up to 115cm deep on the drivers side!!! (this photo was taken before I went in the deeper part)

Image
Another river crossing....

Image
....although the water was fairly low due to a very hot month and no rain! Still fun though! :D

Image
Camping - one of the main things I use the Deli for....lots of weekends away with my g/friend and the dog! 8)

Image
Or even 4 whole weeks of camping! Even bringing a second car so the Deli stays 'set-up' while we explore the coast with the top down.... 8) 8)

Image
4 weeks of camping can create quite a mess though! :?

Image
Joining other Deli owners (aka good friends! :D ) for weekends of camping too....this particular in the Dartmoor forest.

Image
Touringthe country...day trips out to the coast etc....this particular location was in SW Wales

Image
Sometimes we just drive for hours 'discovering' places by chance! no plan, no route set.....just miles of countryside and great views.... :D

Image
The Deli gives us the chance to find spots 'off road' that you wouldn't get to in a normal car - or even a lot of 4x4's! This track was across a collapsed Irish bridge that apparently only the local farmer could access in his tractor! The Deli made light work of the rubble that used to be the bridge! 8)

Image
Back in the Exmoor National Park with friends, this time for the hottest weekend of the year. Picnic stops in picturesque locations - does life get any better! :D

Image
Attending Delica club meets - all over the country. This one was in the Malverns.

Image
I organise meets on beaches for Deli owners to come along, BBQ, chat and have fun! Kids and dogs can run safely around and the adults LOVE it! The perfect location for a Deli meet!

Image
We usually take over the whole area....

Image
As well as all the uses shown above, the motor also serves as a good photo opportunity from time to time!

Image
The Mystery Machine can be a bit of a poser sometimes!

Image
We have our silly moments.......

Image
.......and some very memorable moments! 8) 8) (watching the Japanese drifting championships from the best location near the circuit!! )

I LOVE my Deli and it makes a lot of my life more enjoyable.....no question! LONG LIVE THE L300!!

regards,

Bruce.
