a few litres of free oil

Post by bassnailer »

I have some left over veg oil that we used on the concrete forms for the foundation of a house we have been working on. It was going to be tossed out and being the waste-not sort of fellow that I am I decided to grab it hoping someone else could use it. It isn't much, about four to five litres I'm guessing. It's clean, hasn't been used. I'm in Champlain Heights.

I can also drop it off somewhere.

I couldn't put it in my tank, could I?

How clean is the oil? If it is off the shelf clean then I would think five litres would be fine, the next time you fill up, probably help lubricate your IP.
The person to talk to in my humble opinion would be Delicat.

New oil? Go ahead put 1/2 of it in your tank (2L) then go fill up diesel. You van will love you. Do same on you next fill up...

I have put 20 Litres of straight clean veggie oil into the tank of my L400 with no issues whatsoever. The L300 is even more tolerant of veggie than the L400 is. You could put all of it in at once, or as delicat says, put in a little now, and a little on your next fillup to help the seals on your IP.

My experience with wvo and L300/L400's is that the L400 2.8 4M40 engine is more tolerant to blending diesel and wvo than the L300 2.5 engine.

With that said, too much blending in either one without any heat doesn't do good for the engine and can clog the ip/injectors.

What do you mean "without any heat"? Are you talking about engine heat or air temp? The whole wvo thing is uncharted waters for me, I know nothing. Needless to say, I am a bit hesitant to put it in my tank. And yes, it is off the shelf clean. So, should I put a couple of litres in now or wait for the temp to heat up?

Thanks for all of the advice, btw.

You can blend a few liters of wvo/svo for a full tank of diesel year round.

It's wet and cold now. Anymore than 5-10% blending will cause issues.

If you were anticipating a long drive, could you heat the engine with Diesel, then drive nearly a full tank on a greater WVO/Diesel mix, then fill up with Diesel at the end of the trip?

In the summer. Never in the winter.

You won't be able to know for certain how much blend will be in the injection pump/lines when you shut it off.

These guys run good around 50-60% blending in the summer.

If you will drive straight through two tankfulls, then you can do 90% or so on the first tank, drive it empty and then fill back up with diesel. I did that a number of times driving to Banff, etc... but it was always in the summer during the hot months.

I would not blend right now without a heated filter at the very least. It's too wet/cold.
