Upgrading to 3.08. Making Delica Canada That Much Better.

Post by FalcoColumbarius »

Global Announcement:

Just so you know....
Delica Canada is going to be subjected to some upgrades from the period falling between 18 December, 2010 & 18 January, 2011.

During this time the core board activities should be maintained. As a worst case scenario precaution, the forum has been and is constantly backed up and double tested ~ so in the unlikely event of a major trauma ~ at worst we might loose a few new posts but the forum has been preserved. You may notice changes as the upgrades take effect, some of the board modifications may be temporarily unavailable, such as the Coppermine photo gallery ~ you may notice the absence of the six thumbs that are typically on a DC page... not to worry, it's all good... smiles

If any queries then post them in this thread and we will address them as they come.

Thank you for your patience.

Delica Canada.

Looks like the "View active topics" search query has changed compare to our last version.

Before all new posts showed up there. Now it seems "View new posts" is the way to keep track of new stuff and active topics has a different functionality.

Hey Falco or Felix,
Where is this new "view new posts" button?
Seems cofusing to me ,but as
Red Green so aptly pledges-
"I am a man....
And I can change.....
If I have too....
I guess....."

Right on! 8-)

You need to be logged-in to see the button (it's actually just a text-link) on the right upper corner. Another option would be to use this url: http://www.delica.ca/forum/advanced-sea ... posts.html

We are in the process.... The upgrade has pretty much been done, in fact. What we are doing now is surgical recovery operations retrieving items like the "Photos" or "Calendar" buttons and what ever else comes up. The search engine appears to be bringing in more results but when I gave it the "deisel/diesel" test it still only brought up one or the other.

Why? No one used it. Looking at the stats. Almost zero people checked it either.
Is it actually possible to post an event in the calender if you are not a moderator?

Yes, Christine was using it for a while. Whether it is good or bad... it is better for an intelligent choice to nix the calendar rather than something we don't understand nixing it, would you not agree?

I will miss the view active topics button as it worked before. If you check the site regularly it was an easy way to locate recent posts and threads. Now if you want to check back on a topic that maybe wasn't added to you will have to remember what the actual topic heading/menu was. I don't think the bookmark topic button should be a way around this as it would require extra 'managing' which I don't really feel like doing. I think that this change may lower the use this site gets, just my opinion of course as I can see already that I'm using it less.

cheers

:-D :-D 1 out of 3993 That's a pretty good reason to keep it. Last calendar post April 2009 ... by a moderator. :-D I don't think regular members can actually post an event.

dfnder, I agree. It's probably just a matter of changing some settings on the admin side. Would be great to have the list expand at least to the last couple days. I think our old "View active topics" was back to 7 days.
When does a new post actually disappear from this list? I guess it happens when you log-out, but what is the expiry time of the session if you stay logged-in all the time?

One other thing about the search debate I find funny. Even the creators of phpBB use a custom Google search on their site http://www.phpbb.com/search/?q=view+new+posts I guess they also realized how basic the internal search of their forums software is 8-)

Okay, I'm getting this... At first I was concerned because after the site went down for an hour when I got back on I noticed there wasn't so many people posting... Then I thought ~ well... it is the week of Christmas so maybe that is it. Then I read Fexlboi's post about "View New Posts" but that just does the very latest posts. Then I started looking at "View Unread Posts" which appears to be doing what traditionally would have been the job of "View Active Posts", except the very recent posts which is covered by "View New Posts". This system as it is now is a b*tch for scanning for spam. Not to mention the administration applications for dealing with spam has become more complex. I got off the phone with Mark a little while ago and we discussed these things so the plan is to restore "View Active Topics" to it's former glory, for one.

It's funny, you know? If you take your Starwagon in to get her "upgraded" ~ one would expect to get her back with a new and improved transfer case; a new slip-down linkage for easier shifting.... and maybe another mirror and coffee holders. The last thing I would expect is the accelerator is now where the brake was, which has been moved to the clutch pedal and the clutch has be moved to an overhead hand operated level for "easier application". But don't worry.... we are in complete control.... grins. Patience is a virtue and a hammer & a screwdriver is a great way to get into software packages.

Agree with some of the other observations: I don't think "View active topics" is working anything like it used to - if at all. I've just posted a half-dozen responses and none of them have shown in this filter. Something is amiss, methinks.

Just off the top of my head without investigating, if you are logged in I believe it may show posts which you haven't viewed or even posts that are new since you last logged in? Or maybe posts in the last 24 hours. My personal favorite assumption is that it is actually posts what your Delica feels are important for you to view.

Just checked. You are correct-o.

If you can restore it Falco, that would be great. :M

In the meantime consider "View Unread Posts" as "View Active Topics". Not quite the same performance but delivers pretty much the same info. We're on it. 'Tis a little strange clicking on the right rather than on the left. Being right hand drivers you'd think that clicking on the right would be second nature...
