New Buyer, SO MANY OPTIONS!

Post by Taymin.Kane »

I'm convinced that I NEED a Delica and my girlfriend is on board. I love the older body styles of the L300 and would LOVE to have one with a camper roof. What kind of stuff should I be aware of when buying? I don't want one if it has over 100k on it, I'm also looking for something with a very clean interior / no rust. I'm currently living in Iqaluit, NU and will be moving back to Ontario shortly. I'm excited to here some suggestions!

PS. I'm a graffiti artists / illustrator / photographer so I'm def going to prime / paint this thing so it sticks out / has the most unique paint job. For this reason I think I want to go with an L300, I like the boxier shape.

I wouldn't rely on low mileage to mean reliability, since L300's are all 25 years old now. Rubber seals, hoses, and bushes will settle, degrade, and harden over time, but on a vehicle with higher mileage they're more likely to have been maintained. If you do find a 25 year old Delica with <100k on it, I'd expect your first 6 months to involve replacing a few rubber components.

I'm sure you've had a look through the forums, but the main place to look for rust on an L300 is in the front footwells. I'd say to look at the roof too, but if you're going for a (presumably fibreglass) pop-top that shouldn't be an issue.
Nothing says "poor workmanship" more than wrinkles in the duct tape.

Might be tricky to find a Delica with a fiberglass pop top, but they are out there. Something else to consider is your insurance. I know it can be a hassle (or at least it used to be) getting insurance for Right Hand Drive Vehicles in Ontario.

The L300's are cool. I have a 1993 that I've owned for almost five years now. It's been a great vehicle. The only thing I wished it had was a pop top like what you are searching for.

Anyway, good luck with everything.

Cheers, Phil
