How many delicas have dogs?

Post by konadog »

As a guy whose #1 hobby is his dog (yes, even ahead of the delica :o) I can't help notice lots of great dog shots posted here and there throughout the forum. Any other deli drivers out there smitten with their dogs? Ours came from the pound about ten months ago, a couple of months after we buried his predecessor (very sad as he was only 4 years old ) Anyway, Konadog was looking pretty sad sitting in the pound at 24 kilos of skin and bone. He was well known to the dog catcher as he was a regular escapee and was often on the lamb running through town. At a year and a half old he still needed to be fixed before we could take him home :? When we did he was pretty lacklustre for a week or so and then the N.R.G. high end diet (The BEST prepared dog food available) and quiet house kicked in and we found out why he was abandoned to the pound! CRAZY, CRAZY dog! He came with the name Diesel, but should have been Two-stroke - Zero to full tilt in a split second! Could hardy walk him as he would leap around and whine and pull. It was only about a week in before I started to take him bike riding - ON LEASH. He would leap and pull there too and crashed me several times while we were learning. It took months and many repeat episodes of The Dog Whisperer and a strong, determined force of will, but Konadog has found his stride. He now weighs in at a solid muscle 32 kilos. He gets a 40 min. walk with his 5 kilo pack first thing every morning, no matter the weather and an hour +/- 15 km. bike ride every single day. Only missed 4 days all winter when there was just too much snow. He just LOVES trotting along beside the bike and Jo and I now take turns "driving" and there has not been a crash for several months now 8-) We are working up to being off leash on all the trails and hope, eventually, to do the same everywhere, including the streets downtown where we currently ride with the leash - no pulling or lunging now, just a steady trot, trot, trot. Great dog, easy going with other dogs, never showing any aggression or fear. He still has a ways to go getting over his general anxiety baggage, but we're working on it and with the huge strides he has made so far we are confident he will settle down, eventually... (thank God for Cesar Millan The Dog Whisperer and our bicycles!) Riding in a car, even a delica  is a big source of stress for him. If we're planning a trip out of town we have to take him for his 15 km first, or he whines and pants and is just stressed the whole way. After a good ride though, he is easy and sleeps. Anyway, that's Konadog's story. We just love him! Would love to hear about other deli-dogs out there and to see some pictures clustered together in a single thread! Thanks to any of you who add this thread :M :-D

cool idea.

We just got our delica and already Hudson (our dog) loves it. I try to take him in the car sometimes and he just looks at me like 'are you serious... we're talking the car???' Whereas before I'd have to try and keep him from jumping into the back of the car everytime I opened it. Oh well... I can't blame him, I'm the same way.

We got Hudson from a lady that didn't have time for him, he was too much for her as a puppy. He is a purebred German Shepherd and is now a year and half old (still very much a puppy). He's a pretty big guy. He weighs in around 115-120 lbs last time we had him on the scale.

He might look mean in the last one, but hes actually just a big playful suck. He loves exploring so of course he loves the delica.

The truth is I didn't buy the ride for me I bought for these guys! Tye, Bailey and Kody are all rescues from unfortunate circumstances.
They don't get the fancy couch like Konadog though! Crates to keep them and the "van" safe. Border's have cunning minds and I like
to stay 3 steps ahead of them. Tye and Bailey are X's and Kody pure, unfortunately Kody also has a weak stomach for car travel and
has to be broken in a bit at a time. The rest of the time they spend frisbee'ing, swimming in the lake, and hiking the hills. I can get
them to sit up, down and stay all together. Come is another story though, as 2 of them have selective hearing!
Gee Hudson!! Sliding windows..... you lucky dog...!

Konadog's on that fancy couch alright, whether he likes it or not! If you look in the picture of him sleeping you can see a black strap under his arm - a harness that connects to the seat-belt. He can sit up but can't get off the bench, and hopefully will be safer should we be in a crash... Thanks for the pictures - some really good ones!

Is Konadog's harness something special made for car travel? I'm sure my guys would prefer to ride like that! Adjustable?
Got it at Woofy's for about $20.00. I think there are few different sizes and each is adjustable. The harness attaches to dog with two push clips and the seatbelt feeds through a loop that comes off the dog's back, just behind his shoulder blades. It's really good for a dog like Kona who is anxious about riding in the car as keeps him on the bench seat. I feel better having him strapped in for safety should there be a crash too :M :-D

I'm pretty sure they have doggy seatbelts at Petcetera, Bosleys and likely at any doggy boutiques.

We have our rear seat folded up and out of the way to make room for the pooches, and they can't get through to the front that way, but we always make sure the windows are open for them to stick their nose out (we have sliding windows). Makes for constant cleaning of the windows due to doggy nose prints, but what the heck.

For all that have met the boys, and those who haven't, we have 2 four legged fur-kids, Seiko (the wathcdog) is our old fella (age 9). He's a golden/irish setter/malamutt, and Tundra (the baby) is a purebred Samoyed (18 months) who was gifted to us by a former homestay student and good friend from S.Korea. Seiko is pretty happy to just do whatever we're doing, his favorite thing is napping and going camping with us, Tundra will do anything as long as we're doing something. We love them both to bits, they fill our lives and certainly keep us busy!

What a great story, what a great dog and what a great owner(s)....always makes me smile when I hear a good 'rescue' dog story.

Well here's my little mutt - his name is Jed and he is from the rescue centre/dogs home (pound?)

Image

We've had him 2 years now (which I guess makes him 4yrs old now!) and he is now a very happy dog. He was badly beaten and neglected by his previous owners and wouldn't go near men until about 4 months after we'd got him. He used to pee everywhere whenever I tried to stroke him and he'd hide under the table if someone strange to him walked in the house (often lying in his own urine out of fright!) :-( It breaks my heart to think about his past, but that's all behind him now.

We have shown him all the love a dog could possibly get - we take on LONG walks twice a day and he just loves to go camping. He's not spoilt, just loved to bits.

Image

Everyone who has ever met Jed falls in love with him. He is SO gentle and such a great character. He comes to work with me everyday and we are never apart from each other....all the places I work, the regulars keep treats for him and always say hello to him before me. He is genuinely part of me and apparently, if I go out anywhere and leave him at home, he sits at the door waiting for me to come home, even though he could be curled up with my Girlfriend!

He is a very quick learner and so keen to please. He very quickly learnt that he can’t go upstairs or on the furniture etc…and has never even tried. First thing in the morning when one of us goes downstairs, he literally yodels his head off in delight in his K9 "good morning" song to us…

He is now a lot more confident with strangers (cautious to start with, but not scared any more) and his character seems to develop more and more each day.

Life without Jed would just not be possible for me now – he is my best friend and my true buddy.

Some shots of him on camping trips - note his own little tent which he gets zipped up in at night (he actually sleeps in it every night with the door zipped up - he LOVES it!!)

He loves his beer....

....and he burps/belches a lot after eating too (his after dinner speech! 8-) ) Exquisite table manners!!

Oh - and I forgot to mention.....he's a big sucker for Delica's!!

Any chance, he's straight in there, sat down and ready for another adventure. It's sometimes difficult to get him out! If I'm on an outdoor job and I leave the sliding dor open (getting the tools in & out) I'll often find him in there, supervising me from his seat.

Some really great shots here! Bruce - LOVE that little dog tent! What a great idea for camp trips when dog gets muddy and wet. I love the guy, but just don't want his muddy fur (Kona's is fine and soaks up EVERYTHING!!) messing up our sleeping area. And KB&2Dogs - any chance of getting a few pictures of "the boys" posted here? Thanks for the pictures and stories! :M :-D

We have Stella an F1 Golden Doodle, that is a cross of a pure breed golden retriever and a pure breed standard poodle. We had a rescue dog before her but she didn't take well to being pushed down in the pack order as our 2 kids came into the picture and ended up biting my daughter (2 and 1/2 at the time) on the face, we where able to find her a nice home I'm told it is on an island with 13 miles of private beach. Stella is an amazing dog, very smart, mellow but loves and play and run and is oh so patient with the kids, doesn't seem to notice when the 15 month old is climbing on her and trying to ride her.

oh and this is a pic of our climb up Mount Finlayson with the whole family, 15 month old son Leith, 3.5 year old daughter Ava and my wife Rhiannon. We trimmed just a couple of the hairs in front of her eyes a little after (she was starting to run in a little off from her target when called)

Our Delica has a dog.... Opal the beagle. In this picture she's looking a little unsure about getting down from her throne in the back.... a wee bit high for a little dog. (We discovered a seat belt was necessary for her safety, as she was roaming freely throughout the back of the van with the occasional trip over the centre console into the front!) :o
