Any Advice?

Hello all,

Thanks to those responsible for this forum! I am very interested in the Delica's. I travel alot on gravel roads, specifically from Port Alberni to Nitinaht lake. I am also wanting to head to Baja Mexico, and the roads down there are not that great. So I was wondering if anybody could help me out on suggestions of models and years to look for and what to watch out for (concerns) when looking for my new vehicle. I drive by the folks on the Coombs Highway, by Parksville, is there anybody else on the island importing these cool vehicles on the island?

oh, right now I have a subaru legacy AWD wagon and love it, how expensive have people found maintaining/repairing the Delicas. A wheel bearing on the subaru was $500 to replace

Hey Dale,

I'm just shopping around for one myself. Something I've noticed while looking at pics on various sites here and overseas is the steering wheel [s].

I'm guessing all these 91 wagons come from the factory with a driver's air bag. Many for sale have jobber steering wheels which may or may not be evidence of a collision and subsequent air bag deployment.
Something to consider.

Personally if I had to replace the original, I'd go for a welded chain steering wheel.

Hey guys,

I have just recently ordered a Delica fromTyee Imports in Campbell River. ( I live on Quadra, for the next 9 days anyway ) then I am off to the East Coast. Perfect van for a road trip. I haven't received my van yet, but it is ready to be shipped. When I looked around, Coombs was the only other place accessable to me anyway. I got a HUGE run around from the owner, saying that he "couldn't" get anything in right away. He was eager to tel me though that the price of the vans are going up quickly. The earliest he said he could help me was probably 2-3 weeks before he could even give me an answer. Not being good enough I went back home to Campbell River area, and what do you know. I walked into the office, pointed at the van on Grants ( the owner of Tyee Imports< quiet little fella) computer screen and within three days I got an email saying he got it for me. Will keep you updated on the results. Cheers!

Kitesurferdale - changing the timing belt before a extra long trip would be a good idea.

Also the models from the first half of 1990 have a headlight that is very common and readily available. But I have seen plastic covers for the headlights available from 1991 to newer, which would be good insurance.
All models from 1988 to 1991 seem to have the same undercraige, I would like to see a good skid plate for the tranfser case.

We travel lots on gravel and the low location of the air filter sure clogs up fast! I have been using a Luber-finer (LAF222) air filter that is available locally and it cleans up better then the Mitsubishi one. And it's cheaper then a Fram. Hey thanks everybody for the comments and advice. Still shopping around, noticing alot more on the roads though. One in particular going between Port Alberni and Tofino? Everytime I head to tofino, there it is heading in one direction or the other, blue with front push bar.

There are three Delicas in town plus at least three more in town at any one time. Last weekend I was at Wick and there were two other Delica's in the parking lot. All the toyota vans were together in the another lot-Birds of a feather...

hey dale, don't be at tha nat next summer without one.
however im gonna say, that they come with pretty heavy duty springs and as such are quite rough to drive on wash board and shart, it would can not really compete with the sub, for ride quality, my GF drives a sub.

that being said its is a awesome vehicle.
im currently working on a suspension setup to handle our logging roads quickly and quietly without sacrificing highway drive.

anyone on here from squamish. there's bloody 4 or 5 of them here now
