Hitch group buy???

Post by jcolvin »

Anyone else interested in a hitch group buy? I am thinking of getting a hitch made by this guy (from another thread):

" The folks at Burnaby Hitch suggested I check with E and H Hitch, http://www.eandhhitchshop.com . They, (well he actually,) made a beautiful hitch for me. $300 for the hitch, $65 for the electrics and some tax. 3000 Lb. load rating and 300 Lb. tongue weight. Its a thing of beauty!"

$300 is already pretty cheap, perhaps if we can get a group buy he could make a few at once and drop the price even more. Any interest?

Can you keep the spare mount or do you have to move it inboard or onboard.?
I'd like to get a hitch but I can't fit in my carport with it on the roof and I don't want to give up any interior space.

thanks for any info

You can keep your spare under the car

Post by delicanuck »

Hiya,

Yes your spare can stay under the car. That was my original posting about E&H Hitch. I have since been back to see Ernst again because after I got my stainless stell exhaust installed, the trailer hitch had to be customised again. That cost me another $65.00 but that was money well spent. I have a pretty small unobtrusive looking hitch frame, not the three foot wide bar across the back of the car. It looks nicer than any thing else I've seen. Ernst also welded my nudge bar back onto the top of th hitch, upside down so the hitch really looks like it belongs there. I have a 1 1/4 inch receiver tube on mine and its been fine for me but I think most people would want a 2 inch to take hinged bike racks etc.

I just went to take a picture of it but at night with a flash, my black hitch is invisble. Go figure! I might remember to do that tomorrow.

Depending on how many people want to get an hitch and where you have to come in from, if you want, I could probably have a chat with Ernst and see if he wanted to come up with a price for a quantity.

I want a hitch... but I'm thinking I'll probably have to go with someone a little more local... but then again, I am in Vancouver on occasion, so something may be able to be arranged...

A link to a picture of some E&H Hitch work

Post by delicanuck »

Hi Gang,
If you look here:

http://24.85.196.73/other/P1040253.JPG

you might be able to see a picture of the trailer hitch that the E & H lads did for me. From this picture, you can sort of make out how the hitch is curved around the spare tire and you can sort of make out how the nudge bar is welded back onto the trailer hitch. Not a good picture, I know. I'll take another one as soon as I next remember to, but with better lighting and maybe a bit smaller. You can also just see my spanking stainless steel exhaust. That is money well spent and may be worthy of another group buy. Maybe I should start a thread on that? If you are thinking about a trailer hitch, you might want to make sure you already have the exhaust system your going to stay with so that you don't have to re-install your hitch, like I did.

That looks great. Well, if anyone wants in on a hitch group-buy you've got a couple more weeks then I'm getting mine made.

I'm totally in! I need to get mine made before I head down to Hood River, OR for the May long weekend. I sent an e-mail to the shop the other day, but haven't heard back. My guess is these guys are super busy with guys like us. In any case, I need a 2" square receiver installed to take my new Thule bike rack. Let me know when you plan on making this happen. The sooner the better for me. But keep in mind I'm in Whistler and need to make arrangements. I'm at ppollock@hotmail.com
Thanks.

I'm also in for a hitch. Would like to get mine done over the next two weeks. How many people do we need for a group buy?

Any of you guys in hitch-group-buy considering discarding your bumper bar? If it's white and in good shape I'll give you some dollars for it.

Or invent the hitch you want and Ernst will make it for you.

Hi Peter,

If you were thinking at all about a hitch anyway, you could get in on this group buy thing and while your car is getting a new hitch, just ask Ernst to make up a bumper for you. Whatever shape you want or just like the stock one. It would probably cost you more than someone else's cast off but you would get it and you would have a hitch too.

Hey guys, I'm not sure who all is in, but we should try to make this happen soon. jcolvin have you contacted the shop already? If not, I'm glad to. Maybe we should set a date and/or find out when the best time would be from the shop and get it done. I'm good to go almost any day, but need a heads up as I'm coming from Whistler. Leaving for Hood River, OR in 2 weeks and need a hitch. Yeeehaaaa!!

Hey Gang,

Sorry, I couldn't wait for the group buy and went for a hitch at E&H Hitch, which is only a few blocks away from my house. I spoke with him about the group buy and he mentioned a savings of approx. 50 bucks per person for a group of 4-5. Anyways, he did an awesome job and the hitch is rated at 5000#. Not cheap though. With all said and done, the cost was 500 and change. But great workmanship and a nice looking hitch. I had my nudge bar welded to the hitch as well. Pictures to follow. Cheers

Must be the DeLuxe model

Post by delicanuck »

Hi Zack

I'm guessing you got a bigger hitch than I did. Ernst said he thought mine would take about 3000 lbs. with a 300 lbs tongue weight and it has a 1 1/4 in. receiver tube. Mine cost $360.00 the first time I had it installed.
So if yours is rated to 5000 lbs, I'm guessing it has a 2 in. receiver tube? That would certainly explain the price difference. That will also give you the option of plugging in one of those swing-away bike racks, or any of a number of other things that only fit a 2 inch tube. Sweeeet! So where's those pics?

I would be interested in taking advantage of a group buy for a hitch as well.
