I was comparing the above 2 vehicle with the same size turbo diesel and the Jeep Liberty was rated at 295 ft lb of torque capable to tow up to 5000 lb.
Would anyone know what is the rated torque in ft lb for the L400 and would it out tow the Jeep Liberty or would it be about the same?
Thank you in advance.

I don't know off the top of my head, however the liberty is a lighter vehicle, and as such probably has more "left over" after moving the vehicle itself. the Liberty I would suspect also has a more modern diesel engine, so should have more oomph to it than the delica... that said, it won't be nearly as cool or practical

Re: L400 2.8 L vs Jeep Liberty 2.8L which one have more torque??
Thanks for the info everyone. Looking at the specs in torque and curb weight, I am surprised to see that they both are about the same in all aspect. I can't see any reason why the L400 can not handle up to 5000 lb as the Liberty. Of course, I do agree with what Greeen1 said, it is by far way cooler than the good old Jeep and you can actually stretch out and sleep in style counting the stars through the crystal lite roof.
BTW, jfarsang you mentioned you have towed 4800 lb with no problem. Just wondering if you have installed a transmission cooler in it and how far a distance did you tow? Any attempt to go up Hwy 5 and where did you get your hitch from?
Nice L400 you have, did you have it lifted? Thank you in advance.

It's lifted and no trans cooler, just stock.
I only towed for an hour on the highway.
I would not hesitate to tow that on long distances, however I would not do it without an EGT probe/gauge.
I won't drive a diesel without one regardless as it's an invaluable monitoring tool when pushing up hills.
Hitch was just an old Montero hitch with adapter plates. It's back on the Montero.
The only hitches for L400's that I've seen in person are the one's Mardy has. They look good for the $.

Re: L400 2.8 L vs Jeep Liberty 2.8L which one have more torque??
I'm curious where you found these 4M40 numbers? From what I've found on the web the HP is more around 120-125 for the early 2.8 mechanical injection motors and 140hp for the later years' with electronic injection (both cases intercooled turbo'd). Compared to the HP of the non-intercooled smaller displ. 2.5's, I think 120 sounds more realistic. Your torque number looks correct...except it's Newton-Meters ... so about 217 foot lbs. (231 for the later elec. injected 4M40)jfarsang wrote:L400 :

I pulled it off wiki and mdocuk. Numbers may not be that accurate as I haven't seen an 'official' repair manual yet.
