L400 Model codes and what they mean....
This may be helpful if you are searching Japanese Auctions looking for L400s
These codes are always in the Chassis/Vin Number..
PD8w = SWB, Low roof, 2800 Intercooled Turbo diesel
PD6w = SWB, Low roof, V6 3000cc CCI Petrol
PD4w = SWB, Low roof, 2400cc CCIPetrol
PE means SWB but with HIGH ROOF (70mil higher) + 8w or 6w or 4w depending on engine
PF means LWB + 8w or 6w . All PF LWBs have high roofs and I have never seen a 2.4 in a LWB.
All models come in either 7 or 8 seats but 8 seats in a LWB is rare and not an option with Supers or Royals..
Hope this is helpful. Cheers..

PE8W = SWB, High roof, 2.8L Diesel engine
PF6W = LWB, High roof, 3.0L Petrol engine
PF8W = LWB, High roof, 2.8L Diesel engine
Sort
- P… DELICA CARGO or DELICA SPACE GEAR
- A… Standard wheelbase <2WD>
B… Long wheelbase <2WD>
C… Long wheelbase <2WD>, leaf spring
D… Standard wheelbase <4WD>

Re: L400 Model codes and what they mean....
Hi Terence..Fancy seeing you here.. How can a PD and a PE both be high roof ?? That doesn't make sense. I know you are usually right so I am a bit confused. Every PD I have ever seen has been low and every PE has been high. I have seen literally hundreds. If this is the case how can you determine what kind of roof a Deli has. The whole point of the codes is to help identify the roof and the engine type and in the case of PF the fact that it is a LWB. If you statement is correct that is like saying a "8" can be a V6 and a "6" can be a diesel. It makes the whole code system useless. Why would Mits do that and why does every Deli I have ever seen conform to the codes I out lined. If you do a search on Jap sites using those codes it always finds that kind of roof. Any those that I have seen that were wrong, providing the side gives Vin# the code within the vin usually show that the Delis has the wrong description. I would love to see a vin on a Low roof saying PE but even then I would be suspicious of a rebirthing or something sus. Like I said, Why would they do that ?? Your list suggests that there is no such thing as a PE6w ?? Cheers.

Re: L400 Model codes and what they mean....
I think this is the confusing section, for the Petrols, the PD could be a high roof, but for diesels PD = low and PE = high? Not a problem for me though since I wouldn't by a gasser, can't run them on WVOTerence Yuen wrote:

Perhaps the list shoudl read:
- PD4W = SWB, Standard roof, 2.4L Petrol engine
PD6W = SWB, Standard roof, 3.0L Petrol engine
PE4W = SWB, High roof, 2.4L Petrol engine
PE6W = SWB, High roof, 3.0L Petrol engine

Nope, both the L300 and L400 come in both 2wd and 4wd. but the vast majority of what anyone will be importing will be 4wd.Delicafan wrote:They are not all 4WD ?

Re: L400 Model codes and what they mean....
Can someone help me find the chassis code for a L400 gas in 4WD ? Also do all the models have the bench seats that can be folded down into a bed ?

Re: L400 Model codes and what they mean....
The engine type is entirely in the numerical portion (3rd digit), so to get a gasoline powered 4x4 L400 the VIN would start with a P, next letter would be either D, E, of F, number would be either 3, 4, or 6, next letter would be W
So could be PD3W PE3W PF3W PD4W PE4W PF4W PD6W PE6W PF6W (note, it is quite likely that not all of these models were actually produced, but any that you find will be gasoline and 4x4)
The seats all fold flat to make a bed, but some are 2 benches, and some are a bench and 2 captains chairs. this isn't listed in this part of the VIN, however the one with 2 benches is listed as an 8 seater, whereas the one with the captains chairs is a 7 seater (most (if not all) Super or Royal Exceeds will have the captains chairs, most of the chamonix/jaspers will have the benches (the higher the trim level, the higher the likelyhood of the captains chairs instead of the bench))

Re: L400 Model codes and what they mean....
Don't know of any factory gas Delicas, unless you call petrol gas, then what you are looking for is any model code ending in 6w for 3000cc v6 petrol or 4w for the 2.4 petrol which is not all that common.. As far as the back seats go the 8 seaters can be folded down to make a rather bumpy bed. The 7 seaters can be folded down to make 2 single (one on either side) but equally bumpy beds . You can sleep in the back but you would get a bit sick of it after a couple of nights unless you put a mattress or futon on top. I don't think you will find any L400s with a "3" in the Code as I don't think they make a 2 ltr L400s as far as I know. Cheers.

This is a cultural thing, what the rest of the world calls "petrol" people in north america call "gasoline" usually shortened to "gas".Stiful wrote:Don't know of any factory gas Delicas, unless you call petrol gas
Whereas in the rest of the world "gas" would refer to a fuel that is in a gaseous state such as propane (LPG)

Re: L400 Model codes and what they mean....
I suspected as much. A lot of people here convert the petrol AND diesel models to gas.

Re: L400 Model codes and what they mean....
There is a sense of familiarity with what you wrote, Jasper. I still stand by what I wrote.
I called you Jasper on my previous post, but quietly edited it to Stiful.
Roof type
The Delica Cargo E 2WD models seat 6. The other Delica Cargo models seat 5. The Delica Space Gear Long G seats 10. The Delica Space Gear X, XE, XG, Exceed-1 and XR are 8-seaters, and the Exceed-2, Exceed, Super Exceed and Royal Exceed are 7-seaters. Most limited edition models like Jasper and Chamonix are based on the XG, and so are 8-seaters. There are the rare Jasper Exceed-1 and Jasper Exceed-2, which take the seating configurations of the Exceed-1 and Exceed-2 respectively. For the Delica Cargo, the 2nd-row (of 2 rows) bench seat can be folded forward, extending the flat floor area. For the 7 and 8-seaters, all 3 rows of seats can be folded down together to create a bed.

The only way is to check the subsequent letters. The model code continues as follows.Stiful wrote:If this is the case how can you determine what kind of roof a Deli has.

NL… Standard roof – 4-door with tailgate (Clear window)

A number of Delica Cargo 2WD models were sold with the 2.0L petrol engine. The L400 PD3W was produced, but all were marketed outside Japan.Stiful wrote: I don't think you will find any L400s with a "3" in the Code as I don't think they make a 2 ltr L400s as far as I know.

Hi Terence. Mate your research is impeccable as always. My original post was simply designed to be an easy guide to understand the most commonly used interpretation of the codes but I am sure there will be members who will appreciate your more comprehensive list..
