Delicat, nice job! And having had the opportunity to drag race with you down Kingsway, I gotta say that the Mitsushi is sounding pretty good. I see the snorkel also doubles as a ram air system.
Way cool,

Re: Custom L300 snorkel.
This is something I've always wondered about the Delicas, considering the air intake it above/behind the front wheel and there is the pipe through the fenderwell to the forward end of the vehicle. I too noticed a bit of an increase in output and an decrease in engine temp once I put a K&N cone filter into the Moon Machine (no EGT gauge, but it was noticeable on the water temp gauge).delicat wrote:BTW, I just noticed a VERY nice side effect; my EGT dropped down by about 200 degrees, that's huge! It now sits just above 600 at hwy speed and same results going uphill, it doesn't climb nearly as high. Made me realize the Delica doesn't breath deep enough stock...
Cheers,
David
BTW: sweet snorkel. A little bit taller and some more silicon shot into a few of the larger cracks and you'd just about have yourself a submarine-like vehicle! I like submarines...

Re: Custom L300 snorkel.
How about mounting a Dyson vacuum cleaner in-line with the pipes? That would be quite effective at removing particles from the air. And as a bonus, give that Mad Max look we all know and secretly crave!Green1 wrote: one of the thoughts I always had with a snorkel, was if there was a way to simulate what mitsubishi did so well on these engines with the "gap" that lets debris fall out...
We all know that in the air filter compartment under the driver's seat there is an air intake from the front of the vehicle, and then a gap (that people often mistakenly think should have a pipe on it) and then the actual air intake, this allows any heavy particles (water, bugs, dust, whatever) fall out before reaching the actual intake and clogging up the filter.
Now my thought was if there was some way to put valves or some such on the snorkel intake in to the housing that would do the same thing, leave that same gap, BUT with a flip of a lever or something, close the gap for when you actually need the water fording ability of the snorkel...

Re: Custom L300 snorkel.
I'll take better pictures to replace those XL's ones but keep this in mind:
The aftermarket ones coming from Taiwan are nice and snug but won't create the same air flow as the one I've done as it keeps the original air ducts and entrance location (which adds a few more elbows). They should still be a major improvement though. I think the original pipes are under 2 1/8" ID while the one I've done are 2 7/8" ID. The one I've done also comes straight into the air filter canister, eliminating all but one 90 elbow (elbow going through body panel from the outside). And they are all round pipe, no transition in shape. I've also fully sealed it so should be fine for a swim.
All I need to figure is the rear diff breather tube. It goes into the cross-member frame but not sure if it stops there or if it goes higher. One option would be to create a loop so that water couldn't make it's way down the diff but not sure if it could create a air lock. Other option is simply to extend the tube.
Only downside to my system is it ended up costing me more than buying an aftermarket one, that's it.
Cheers.

Re: Custom L300 snorkel.
In the past with my 4x4s, i did a loop, enough slack for axel articulation and then ran it up the body into the the back of my tail light, over time i supose it would build up a little muck from vapor , but i never found any.delicat wrote:. And it may have cost more than a plastic tube, but Ive always thought a built rig is better than a bought one and there is a serious coolness to having a snorkel you built how you wanted it, and not like everyone else will have. Im building one for my L400, but a short snorkel to just come up to the windshield tucked in behind where the hood will come to and the mirror will reach
GREAT WORK!!!!

So, then when you go wading deep, you will have an air-water intercooler. Now that should have you running cool!EnviroImports.com wrote:Im building one for my L400, but a short snorkel to just come up to the windshield tucked in behind where the hood will come to and the mirror will reach.

that combined with the entire block being submerged would make it really cool.
