oil filter
Hi and thanks in advance (I'm on a shaky dial up and get kicked off all the time so I have to be brief).
Mardy sent me some new original oil filters but I left Calgary before they arrived. I think it's time for a change to the 5 40 synthetic and need to find a filter here in Nelson. They have a Wix that is supposed to work but if someone could varify or cross reference a part number for me I would appreciate it.
I could have them send me a Baldwin in tomorrows order from Edmonton but I have two numbers (bd 28 and bd 7095). Anyone know what one is best? Any difference?
Thanks for your help and sorry I would have searched more but with this connection time is running short if I want to get a order in. Oh and the snow is awesome.
Cheers, djelica

Re: oil filter
Thanks Gregg,
I'm amazed that this thread made it on this connection. I found a Wix 51675 that some one here had on the shelf. I picked up the oil too and hopefully will change it all tomorrow. Anyone know if this filter really fits? I was cross referencing from a few sources I was able to find from searching here (when I was in town at the library today - high speed) but I didn't see this one actually named as a known fit.
Cheers again for this great resource.

Re: oil filter
Well the Wix was a wrong fit, but it was too late as I had it up on the hoist (I'm in the Kootneys right now with no garage) with the oil out already. Wound up putting the old one back in but with only about 3500 km on it I'm hoping its OK.
Anyway, I tell the mechanic that the vehicle may take up to 8 liters and that he should put in 6.5 and run the engine and top it up after checking. I asked him how much it took and he told me the whole 8 liters. Well I looked at it later and I think there is too much oil in there.
I know this can be bad for many vehicles but what about the 4m40? Do I need to take some out?
Thanks for any help,
Darren

Re: oil filter
I would get the oil to the correct level.Running with over full oil could lead to some problems with oil seals if left for too long. Better to be safe than sorry.

Re: oil filter
Thanks Paul,
I was just about to remove some oil and thought I would check for answers before I started.
My machine seems to have developed a problem starting. In Calgary at -20 with it plugged in it would start right away after one cycle of the glow plugs without touching the fuel peddle.
For some reason with it plugged in and only -5 to -8 in the Kootenays I will just not start without a major effort. I have a new Optima battery (wanted Oddesey but not available and big $$) now and changed to 5 40 synthetic oil but still it will not start like it did in Calgary. Something has changed and I don't know what. It seems to not have enough fuel (I don't see a lot of white smoke as I crank it over).
Any advice? I sure hope it's not the fuel pump.
Thanks, djelica

Elevation?
Perhaps someone smarter than me could explain what mechanical stuff would be affected...

Re: oil filter
Well Calgary is actually higher than where I am now, so elevation may not be it. Also I have been here since Dec 23 and the problem only started on Jan 04. It was starting as normal up until this time. I am now hoping it may be water/ice in the fuel filter.
Doing a search for a fix, but with dial-up it is dicey.
Cheers, djelica

Re: oil filter
Is it just first cold starts or is it all the time?If it was water in the fuel filter your water in fuel light should be on(as long as it is working correctly).Starting issues on L400's usually are either glow plugs or the fuel pump front seal. You could try to replace the fuel filter, you will have to remove the battery to get to the filter.

Re: oil filter
Thanks for your help Paul,
I just removed the battery to try and FIND the fuel filter, but I really have no idea what I'm looking for so I put it all back together. No indicator lights on the dash either, so may be not the problem.
And yea, it's only on cold start up and once it is warmed up it starts no problem after that. I've tried to search for "drain fuel filter" and just "fuel filter" but I'm not finding the info I need to figure it out.
What's the deal with replacing the pump seals? This is a major operation, is it not.
I am also searching for "checking glow plugs" and I do remember seeing something on this but I can't find it now. This dial-up is not helping either.
Thanks again for any help,
Darren

Re: oil filter
Hi there Darren.
The fuel filter is mounted on the inner fender just behind the coolant overflow tank to the right of the battery.
Right at the bottom of the fuel filter there is a tap that you open and drain off any water that gets in to the filter.
The fuel pump seal is a 5 hour job to replace as the fuel pump has to be removed from the engine as it is driven off the timing gears on the front of the engine.
The glow plugs you can remove and test if you are confident enough but you will need to get a multimeter to test the resistance of them.
It always hard to try and diagnose vehicles over the internet but i hope that this gives you a direction to go and if in doubt have someone who knows these vehicles check it out.
Hope this helps and good luck

Re: oil filter
Hi Paul,
Thanks again for your help. I have a certain amount of mechanical savvy but it is information that I am often lacking. I also am away from my primary residence and working outside in the Kootenays, so sometimes it is a bit more difficult.
I am sure I can check the glow plugs if I can find instructions. I have seen some posts on the UK site where they are checking but hooking up them up directly to a battery. I'm not sure this is the best idea, but what is the way to test them with the multimeter? I have searched for this but can't find a page (oh and what socket is required to get them out?)
Do you do the fuel pump seals? How much are we talking about. I figure this will need to be done at some time and I need this machine to start for me at cold temps without being plugged in for several days.
Someone should offer a "cold weather version" where all this has been done and the machine is guaranteed to start when cold and not plugged in.
Thanks again for any help you can offer,
Darren

Re: oil filter
When we import L400`s from Japan we replace batteries, all filters, glow plugs, front injection pump seal, radiator, expansion bottle, rad hoses, thermostat and install block heaters. This is now done to all vans that we prepare without questioning whether they need it or not. If all this work is carried out pre-sales it makes for a lot less problems when travelling to cold climates.
But this costs a lot more to carry out than most `dealers` are willing to spend on their vehicles. If you are buying a dealer supplied van for $9000 chances are it meets DOT specs only. If you are paying $12-14000 then you should be getting a vehicle that will not leave you stranded when it gets a little cold out.

Re: oil filter
So cc you do the front injector pump seals. What do you charge for this? I now know that I have three bad glowplugs that I will replace with the best I can find, and I no longer think the seal is too bad. But if this is a possible future problem then I will be looking around for costs to do this before it becomes a issue.
Do the seals in the pump itself need attention also? Do you offer rebuilds? Again someone should offer the cold weather option and if you think you have the solution then I will check out your stuff.
Thanks, djelica

Re: oil filter
Darren,
It be a good idea to call Glen directly. Could save you a lot of time waiting for posted answers and get the right info in one shot.
Oya ,when I mentioned Baldwin BD28 filter, I didnt realize you had an L400, but I think they should be the same since its just displacement that we are talking about- Chime in mechanical Gurus if this is not the case. ( I may decide to get one some day
)
Cheers
Gregg
