Putting Transfer Case in Neutral
Hey all-
If possible, I would like to find out if I can put my transfer case in neutral. I have seen other cases that have an unmarked neutral that is available to those in the know.
Is this the case with the L400? Mine is a 94 super exceed.
Thanks,
Jay.

Never seen reference to one; have you tried the UK or Oz websites?
Are you planning to tow your L400?

Re: Putting Transfer Case in Neutral
i do belive that the transfer case goes into neutral once you put the transfer case into 2 wheel grive correct me if I'm wrong cause there is no power being transfered to the front tires (tyres) at this point, thus putting it into neutral...

Re: Putting Transfer Case in Neutral
Automatic Delicas do not have a neutral on the transfer case. Manual Delicas *MIGHT* (the manual Pajeros do, so the Delica may be the same)
However from what I've read, even with the transfer case in neutral it is not recommended to flat tow the Delica.

neutral on a transfer case disconnects both the front and rear tires from the transmission, 2H still has the rear connected.
as for towing flat I believe you can get a pump installed on the transmission to allow an automatic to be towed in N flat, not sure if that works for all transmissions or not but I know that RVers do it all the time.

You'll notice that 90% of RVs have 1 of only 2 or 3 models of vehicle behind them, I suspect that's because it's a real pain to set up any other ones.loki wrote:as for towing flat I believe you can get a pump installed on the transmission to allow an automatic to be towed in N flat, not sure if that works for all transmissions or not but I know that RVers do it all the time.

But if you lift the front of the deli and just roll it on the rear wheels and it's in 2wd the front tires (tyres) shouldnt move yea???? or any towing company wont tow a 4 wd vehicle right so there must be a way yea....

in 2wd it's the REAR tires that need to be kept off the ground as they are still connected.madmazda wrote:But if you lift the front of the deli and just roll it on the rear wheels and it's in 2wd the front tires (tyres) shouldnt move yea???? or any towing company wont tow a 4 wd vehicle right so there must be a way yea....
Really the only good way to tow a delica is on a trailer.

Re: Putting Transfer Case in Neutral
this is true, they usually pull saturns (their auto has a true neutral or something, this is why my grandfather pulled on behind his rv) or a 4x4 with a transfer case that has neutral. but it is possible too do :)Green1 wrote:You'll notice that 90% of RVs have 1 of only 2 or 3 models of vehicle behind them, I suspect that's because it's a real pain to set up any other ones.loki wrote:as for towing flat I believe you can get a pump installed on the transmission to allow an automatic to be towed in N flat, not sure if that works for all transmissions or not but I know that RVers do it all the time.
also tow trucks have dollies to put under tires that should be turning, and they will also use a flatbed, in the case of a deli they would likely put the transfer case in 2H and lift the back and tow it backwards.madmazda wrote:But if you lift the front of the deli and just roll it on the rear wheels and it's in 2wd the front tires (tyres) shouldnt move yea???? or any towing company wont tow a 4 wd vehicle right so there must be a way yea....

Re: Putting Transfer Case in Neutral
so with this bit of information I can park my van someplace that I'm not supposed to leave it in 4x4 and it will be hard for them to tow it so the best way they can tow it is to put dollies under the wheels...lol...

Re: Putting Transfer Case in Neutral
It doesn't really make it that hard to tow, adding dollies to it takes an extra 60 seconds or so, the vehicle can still be towed in under 2 minutes, and that's assuming they try not to damage it, if they don't care it's even quicker (they can drag it even if none of the wheels turn)

Re: Putting Transfer Case in Neutral
they also probably wouldn't have too hard a time using the slim jim to unlock it and shift it back into 2H, unless of course these have vastly different locking linkages than domestic market stuffmadmazda wrote:so with this bit of information I can park my van someplace that I'm not supposed to leave it in 4x4 and it will be hard for them to tow it so the best way they can tow it is to put dollies under the wheels...lol...![]()
