Towing my L400
Towing my L400
hello from Las Vegas. I came down in my L400 and enjoyed every inch of the trip. My question is as follows:
can I purchase a motor-home and tow my l400 behind? it is a 3000 petrol with 4wd and automatic. do I need to get 2 wheels up, 4 wheels up or just a farmer tow bar?
any help would be much appreciated, my wife doesn't want to drive either one home.and I refuse to take chances on wrecking my baby.
clarence...

Re: towing
Hi Clarence, we met at CVI last week. Glad to hear you've made it safely so far on your drive down south.
From all I've read on the subject it's best to tow your L400 on dollies or a trailer to keep all 4 wheels up if you don't want to do any damage.
Others can provide more specific rationale but here's a recent thread on the subject:

Safe travels,

Re: towing
You'll want to do either one of the following to tow safely :
- tow the L400 on a trailer (safest)
- unbolt/remove both the front and rear driveshafts, put transmission in neutral and leave the floor shifter (2H/4H/4Hlc/4Llc) in 2H (rear wheel drive mode)
with the front and rear driveshafts removed, there will be no strain on the driveline.
Of course you'll need brake/turn lights, reflectors on the rear and the steering lock/tow arm.

Re: towing
A drive shaft shop can add quick disconnects to both drive shafts so you can easily disengage them without getting dirty.
I know nothing about them...just see them at the shop that builds my 4x4 driveshafts for me.

Or put it in two wheel drive and pull backwards on your trailer. Front wheels down.
The front do disengage don't they?

Re: towing
the front drive shaft disengages from the transfer case, but I don't know what effect having the differential turning will have... (the front hubs do not disengage from the drive shaft on the L400 unless you add manual hubs)

Re: towing
Are you sure they don't disengage?
Someone said that about the l300 and we checked
they disengaged.. Firsthand knowledge?

Re: towing
Ok, my wording wasn't quite right, but the end result is the same. The L400's front wheels are permanently connected to the front axle, regardless of which mode you are in, as such, even if you are in 2 wheel drive the front wheels still turn the axle, which turns the front driveshaft, only at the transfer case is it disconnected.
from the factory the L300 has auto-locking hubs. the L400 has flanges. yes I'm sure.

Are you sure it came from the factory with flanges? I'd guess that it had auto hubs from the factory that were swapped to flanges by a previous owner. My L-300 came from the factory with flanges - I switched em out for manual lockers...

From the factory... I'm sure too. There are a few other out there like that as well - A low end option I guess.

Re: towing
Flanges were not a factory option on the L300's because of the 4WD system.
Flanges were a factory option on the L400's because of the AWD system.
If an L300 came to Canada with L400 flanges, it was installed after its initial sale.
If an L400 came to Canada with auto/manual hubs, it was installed after its initial sale.

Re: towing
With all due respect - and that is a whole lot..., that is incorrect... The flanges on my 300 were factory and they can be found on other 300's too. Rare, but they're out there.

How do you know that they were a factory part rather than after market?konadog wrote:With all due respect - and that is a whole lot..., that is incorrect... The flanges on my 300 were factory and they can be found on other 300's too. Rare, but they're out there.
Do you have a "wheel lock" light?
