Camping 4x4 Manning East Gate 20-22 August
Camping 4x4 Manning East Gate 20-22 August 2010. Everyone is welcome to join us.
Our exact campsite is unknown yet, will be near East Gate, probably not a pay site instead just dry camping by the old logging roads. We will post a note by the door of the wonderful homestyle cafe at East Gate (beside the gas station).
Anyone wishing to convoy there, we have 3 departure times from Burnaby, as delica owners have different work schedules: 11 am Friday, or 6 pm Friday, or 8am Saturday. Returning Sunday.
Friday 11am departure is: Delicat, Falco Columbarius, Tardis Deli with Christine, We will search for nice camping spot.
NOTE: Tardis Jay is looking for a ride later with anyone as he works Friday until 5 in Burnaby.
Friday 6pm departure is: Rich D with partner Maria (email him if you want to meet, use the PM link then click email, thus he sees the text on his phone immediately).
Saturday 8am departure is: Fexlboi.
Anyone else?? Newcomers very welcome, we're friendly. Well Behaved dogs and owners welcome. Kids OK, Delicat will bring one or 2.
Start packing now. Just need your sleeping bag and pillow, water, cookies to share, and essentials (toilet paper and shovel). You can always eat in the cafe (great home cooked meals). Obviously no campfires, but bring your stories to share around the camping lantern. Some people go 4x4ing during the day, some just relax with a good book at the campsite.
Communications: the usual. Cellphones should work (there is a telus payphone at the EastGate station). Ham Amatuer radio 146.52 for Falco Va7 MLB, or 147.26 for Ve7 cup (Christine). Marine VHF channel 69 dude. FRS channel 5 sub 22. Delica (del-LEEEK-ka) is a usual callsign for all of us ie Delica Tardis or Delica Delicat.
See you there. Cheers, Christine.

In the interest of specificity, I'm making the meeting point official: Eastgate
Route and Coordinates: 49.136575,-120.617008
This is the place: We can bring Jay. Hell, he can drive and I can finally ride in the back of my van.

I would have loved to you joined you folks, but I had already made plans for Harrison for the weekend. I hope you all had a good time, and I hope to be there for the next one. I'll be camping with a nine month old though, but she is a good sleeper!
Re: Camping 4x4 Manning East Gate 20-22 August
Everyone is back safe and sound.
The Whipsaw's reputation is overstated. The trail itself, after 24kms of typical FSR, becomes an alpine 4x4ing heaven.
Very easy trails with most of the high spots being sandy so great spot to bring novices. A few token rocky bits but nothing even remotely akin to the ATV trails we did on Vedder some months back. My stock Deli never touched, and I was on road tires. Most of the videos online are of areas that are technically off trail and off limits, and taken during wet season.
We actually took two other roads, and a few secondary roads before getting on the >20km mark of the Whipsaw proper. We still didn't manage to explore the entire area.
I want to return to this spot on an upcoming weekend and explore some more. Please PM me if interested.
I took so much video and photos that it will take a day or two to sort through and make a proper set. I'm still importing but here's a quick taste:

Looks like you guys had a blast - I am very interested in tagging along next time to finally check this area out!!
Too bad I missed it, but it was nice to run into Falco, David, and Flexlboi on the Crowsnest hwy yesterday. Your trucks were a bit dirty.. but not dirty enough!

I had a good time with great company. The Whipsaw is an amazing trail trough alpine areas. I thought it would be more like Stave Lake with tons of offroaders, but it was surprising empty. Hope the rednecks and mud boggers stay calm and the area will be open for a long time. We a coming back for sure! Next time with more fuel and more days to explore...
