Handling/suspension

Post by bluetick »

I use my 91 Exceed for a work vehicle. I shoe horses, so I carry a fair bit of
weight - anvil, steel, tools, etc.
The vehicle handles it well. The leaf springs in the back exhibit performance contrary to their
puny appearance!! My van does have a bit of body roll, especially front to back during braking. Is this normal? Do I need new shocks? Even without a load, I can make the van rock like one of those hydrolic "pimp" cars at a stop.

Welcome aboard.

Watching a Deli dive and bob reminds me of mine before; torsions bars tightened/raised to level the vehicle, shocks changed and suspension bushing changed with the front torsion bar bushing being a must do. Doing this to both of our Deli's, though mine never received new shocks, transformed the ride. Though we also find they ride smoother with weight in the back.

i aswell just cranked up the torsion bars ,this has made a much stiffer ride and very little nose dive ,wich was really starting to wear me thin, (including my front brake pads) i just did this today and it was very simple i recomend doing this for sure.
I am stable in most situations that I have no reservations in stormy conditions.

Just how easy is it to do-it-yourself the torsion bars? I'd like to do it myself if I can.
Body rolls and nose dives make control on slick icy roads precarious at best. I also travel a great deal on gravel roads, and the chattering whoop-de-doos all over the place pitch my van around. I haven't even looked at my torsion bars, so i guess I haven't really done my prerequisite homework to ask the question, but any tips would be appreciated.

It's real easy to do, just crawl under the van and crank them up... heres some pictures and a play by play http://www.delica.ca/forum/adjusting-th ... s-352.html

doing the torsion bars should be pretty easy to do yourself... just remember to get a wheel alignment done afterwards!

Hey Josh,
Are yrs cranked all the way?
How much lift did it give you overall?
And, did you lift the back end, and if so - in what manner, shackles, blocks, re-curved springs, add a leaf - other? I'm going with re-curved springs I think or maybe add a leaf - heard I'll probably have to get 2" more out of the leafs if I crank up the front all the way....what do you think?

Setting up to go to 31"x10.5x15 on Toyota rims this spring - will need create some room!!!! If I crank up the front end all the way now (and get alignment) - do you think it will look too high in the front or negatively effect the handling while I wait to do the back end and tires in the spring?

Appreciate anyones thoughts.....on this.

Cranking the torsion bars just levelled mine out. Josh and I have shackles that are yet to go on, maybe when I get up north Josh and I can get our shackles ons.

Sean,

Cranking the torsion bars just levels it all out and fits the 31/10.5's wonderfully (if you trim the front wheel wells, and take off the mudflaps)... no need for any other mods. As for handling i feel that it tightened up everything and handles better. Oh make sure you get the right offset as well... adam (adrock) posted it somewhere i think. As for lift, with the 31's i think i have almost 13 inches clearance at the lowest point.

Tks for the input. I'd be going with the same Toyota rims that Mitch is using so I think should be ok. Just waiting for my buddy to transfer all his cool bits from his rusting out Canadian BJ series Landcruiser to his "fresh off the boat" turbo diesel Japan RHD landy - the best of Japan Landy along with the best of his aftermarket bits - going to be amazing unit when he's done!
Well - off to go do my quarter panel leak repair this morning!!!!! Wish me luck!
