looks like GTR is a one post wonder - interesting conversation though. Wine is right.
One sure way to reduce emissions is to drive less. I think that a lot of people miss the bigger picture. Driving a prius will not help us out of our current imbalance. I have three quick points.
Dirty sources of oil produce more emissions than the end consumer does. The Tar sands are the poster child for this point. It takes as much as 2L of gas to produce 1L of gas. They are the biggest single CO2 producer in the country. They are polluting the Athabaska river, and destroying a huge area of land - and if you think that the oil companies have the resources to restore this area when they are done, your wrong. We should be willing to pay more for cleaner fuel.
Second - Beef production arguably produces more CO2 than all vehicles in world combined - air, land, and sea. Eating less beef can have more effect than any reductions you can make at the tailpipe. I love beef - but we buy our beef directly from a rancher - it's more expensive, we eat less, but boy is it tasty (and much more healthy) Anyone ever seen a large scale industrial feed lot in person - it's disgusting and it's hard to believe that it becomes food. Quality should be more important than quantity.
Last, The Plan B earth restoration plan that addresses deforestation, soil degradation, water pollution, and population mitigation would cost an estimated $161 Billion. This is equal to a mere 1/3 of the US military budget - which is 1/2 of the world military budget. Consider that an F16 produces the same amount of CO2 in one hour as the average american produces in a year.
In many ways, tailpipe emissions are a bit of a red herring that divert attention away from much bigger issues that are fundamental to the way our society is structured. I think that we all have to do everything we can - absolutely. The best thing we can do is to spend more, and buy less. Buy local, buy green, and buy things that last.

Very well put Glenn; we have huge waste of all of our natural resources in the so-called developed world. I assume you have watched food:inc. from your beef reference. As Pollan says we used to spend 20% of our income on food, 10% on health care; now its reversed.
North Americans do eat too much chemically treated corn fed, shot full of pharmaceuticals beef laden with deadly e-coli (which by the way don't live in the rumens of grass fed healthy cows) than we truly need. And by eating local their is a much lower carbon footprint, and you are keeping your neighbor in business producing high quality food who will buy your product or service one day. For a list of local organic food growers in the Fraser Valley go to the Farm Folk: City Folk website. One last thing.......don't be fooled at your grocery store into thinking 'natural' means its grown without chemicals, pharmaceuticals, humanely, free range on non crowded farms because it isn't necessarily so. All to often this is the same old stuff in a 'green' package at a price half way in between; the bad side of marketing. There are no regulations governing 'natural' like there are for Certified Organic. We must meet a very stringent set of rules to protect you the consumer.

'Natural' is like saying 'Made in Canada' It's true to an extent. To be 'Made in Canada' I've been told tht only 10 or 20% of the manufacturing process has to be done here. For example if something is packaged here but produced elsewhere it could still say Made in Canada. I completely understand your point of view wine and I plan on running WVO this summer and I buy organic from local farmers etc whenever possible / whenever I can afford to. Coming back to the point about EGR's I believe that it is better for the environment not to have it on and even if it pollutes a little bit more because it's been removed, the fact that it will not stress the engine as much means that in the long run less replacement parts will be needed. Driving a vehicle rom the 60's that belches smoke out is actually better than buying an electric car etc because of the massive amounts of pollution that are created in the manufacturing process. Bringing Delica's into Canada to stop them from being scraped is already doing something environmentally friendly and the next step is to run WVO whenever possible and of course drive less (which is a shame as I love to drive).

For those that are going to or have already blocked the EGR, what adjustment (if any) should be made to the fuel pump to compensate?

I have to comment.
Climate change is occurring (I have spent 5 years researching this directly). Key is changing. Yes, glaciers can still get bigger is some areas as climate patterns change. Sorry websites and internet are not credible sources of information.
Second, nothing wrong with building with wood. You either need to cut trees or allow forest fires or insects to kill them. Like all living things trees too must die at some point. Cutting them and allowing new trees is important as old trees have lower respiration rates and dead trees release carbon back into the system. Building long term structures ties up carbon.
I thought the ozone hole was growing (not my field of expertise) but I do know that the new refrigerant still affects the hole just less. Dupont developed it and as part of the deal for it it cannot be banned. I think it is 90% better however almost every new car now comes with airconditioning compared to before. The reality has not changed much.
This developed way of life will wreck the planet. My riding to work will not fix it will not even cover my sins....

Near stock arrival condition, EGR not blanked, averaged 12-14L/100km at 115km/hr indicated. Light smoke at WOT.
EGR blanked and alignment done, all fluids changed, synethtic oil, diff etc, averaged 11.4-12.4L/100km at 120 km/hr indicated. Big improvement. 0 smoke under all conditions.
Saw even better mileage at times, got around 10.3-10.5L/100km when driving between 80-100km/hr with the TC locked up.
Bought at 56km, now at 65km, I checked these numbers often.
94 L400 Auto

I tend to add a liter of Canola Oil after a fill up every so often due to most diesel being low sulphur. It looses its lubricity because of the lack of sulphur. The oil helps plump up gaskets and keep things running smooth. For me anyway...

That's basically what I meant. I add it to a fill up. Its oil so it is going to mix with the diesel well either way.
Kleen Flo injection cleaner seems to be great too. You get it at Lordco in a red bottle, add that every month or so and it seems to make your rig run very smooth.

So I am a newbie here but I had a thought - if you blank your egr and go out and plant some trees you should be good to go. Seriously how many are out there with blanked egr.
