Thanks for your reply, Green, I drive (American built) diesel vehicles at work all the time, and that's why I was a bit distressed at the Delica's idle...It was like it was running on 3 cylinders, until I put it in gear and accelerated. Then it ran smooth until I brought it back and put it in park... same rough idle. It was mild outside, so I guess this Delica maybe had some issues. The funny thing was, this vehicle was already sold and waiting to be picked up...the girl arrived just as I was leaving. With all due respect ,
I don't want to throw mud, I'm just relating my experience.

i have been to japan 3 times in 2007 and i have never seen a delica get sold for 500-800 USD. thats where the bidding starts BUT, due to high demand in canada and other countries the prices go up. i have never seen a unit anyone in their right mind would want to buy for less than 4000. there is always "good deals" but all the ones ive seen folks buy have spent way more than what they saved in the first year of ownership. i have close friends in japan who are auction brokers and dealers and a good vehicle will always demand a fair price anywhere.

Hey guys, Benn here from Comox Valley Delica Imports. The post about Delicas for $500 to $800US at auction in Japan... Well there is an old addage..... you get what you pay for... Keep that in mind when you see those ones going for so cheap. Remember there are dealers who send thier inspecters to check vehicles at auction before they bid. If no one is bidding and the price seems pretty low..... there probably a reason why.. The auction sheets are good but with my guys I was about to put a bid on a vehicle based on the average quality 2 images and I got feed back from my inspector saying that it had extensive hail damage!!! I could't see that in the images!! I would recommend buying from someone who has an independent inspection facility in Japan that can look at the vehicle for you and give you some advice before bidding. I have this option with my source and I get another inspection sheet and regrade with all my bids. The vehicles can be returned if the don't meet my auction requirements as well.

As for Markup, I make $1200Cdn per vehicle and thats it!!! You pay all actual costs, I just take care of all the red tape for you. I arrange all the DOT compliance or just bring the vehicle in to Vancouver for you and you can do it all with my instructions. You pay for my knowledge and experience. Less hassle for you and it puts a Delica in your driveway! I can even arrange a parts package for you on arrival. Check out my basic site, easy to navigate and straight forward.. Cheers, and let me get some Delicas in for you.... I Love seeing those babies arrive fresh out of the container... Just like Christmas..

For all the people who think importers make a bundle here is our cost on our recent import done by my wife:

1992 Delica Exceed 265,000 Yen
Auction fee/inland transport/deregistration/domestic transport to dock, envirnmental fee: 105,000 Yen
Shipping 190,000 Yen
560,000 Yen/115= C$4869
Add to that:
CFIA $150
CBSA $150
Customs 6% GST+Duty+AC charge $365
Freight Forwarder $475
Tow from port to inspection shop $89
New battery $169
New tires/news lights/DRL install/ inspection $1462
ICBC insurance for 2 weeks: $215
Total $7944
Sold for $8900
She figure she spent 20 hours bidding/negotiating with Japanese side/ordering shipping/making payments, 30 hours once here doing all importing, inspection, payments, back and forth to repair shop, moving vehicle from shop to house, managing fixes and another 30 hours advertising, showing, selling and closing the Delica sale. Total 80 hours and $956 profit. My wife tells me it isn't worth it. The payment is only $12 an hour! Oh yes and fuel surcharges from the shippers mean that to import the same Delica again now (example is 3 months old) would be another $400. Bottom line is if the Delica importer/seller isn't making $2000 they might as well be a waiter/waitress in a restaurant.

Ive worked at an importers for years and there are no lucky cars anymore. You get what you pay for.

On that note I've purchased two trucks from Max Overdrive in the last year and have been problem free for both.

The days of buying cars cheap in Japan are gone, but at least you can still buy them right?? For now :D
