Interior Heater Qustions

Post by SquamptonRyan »

Hello out there in Delica Land!

I just got my Delica about a week ago and pretty much just freaking love it. Just a question to throw out there. How hot do other peoples heaters blow for the interior? It is about 7 degrees outside today, and after having the heater going full blast for about a hour of driving the interior temp reading was at about 23 degrees. Normal? Seems a little cool to me. I do realize it is quite a space to fill, just wondering if other delis are simmilar.

Rock out in the Deli infested north west my cool van brothers (and sisters, of course)

When mine is barely into the red it gets the van too hot. I'd say something is not quite right. Sorry can't offer a solution. Perhaps others can help.

If you haven't replaced the thermostat in the cooling system, that may be the problem... if a thermostat is stuck open the coolant won't heat up to the correct operating temperature and you won't get proper heat. This happened to my 1980 E100 van in the winter... no fun without heat, but a cheap, easy fix.

Also it could be a plugged up heater core, a lot of Delicas come here with neglected cooling systems, might need a hot flush or something.

We had the same problem with the TardisDeli, no heater heat, but the engine ran fine anyway. Replaced the thermostat. Now wonderful heat, in fact meltingly hot on the skin. But replacing the thermostat, not fun, lie underneath deli, reach up to through a gap in the frame to the lower radiator hose and with a bright little flashlight you can just see and touch the thermostat (you did let the engine cool first, and blocked the wheels). Now you can find a contortionist with tiny hands or remove the oil filter, or remove other important things, or take it to the mechanic (hey find out now with the simple stuff whether he'll be your friend in need times later). We got a thermostat replacement and gave to the mechanic, but turns out it was the wrong size (so double check the number first) so mechanic ordered a replacement one which he said runs a bit hotter than the spec. But all is happy now. Cheers, Christine and Jay, TardisDeli, Burnaby BC.

Hey Max and Ryan,

I'm in Brackendale, above the bistro, and my heat is only warmish at best too. Would you guys mind if I tagged along to see how you make the heat hotter?

Cheers,
Dan.

We quote one and a half hours to change out the thermostat . Remove drivers seat and the large metal plate it is mounted on . Then unbolt the power steering pump and swing it out of the way . The lower hose / thermostat housing is now easy to reach . I would strongly recommend changing upper and lower radiator hoses themostat and radiator cap all at the same time . Improves the operation of the cooling system and gives way better heater heat . Water pumps are also a very good investment as its not what they look like from the outside but what is going on inside the engine . I will post a picture here later of a water pump taken out of a van with a no heat complaint . This van had 67,000km on the clock . It had no leaks externally but has suffered the typical japanese lack of maintenance . Moral of the story .... flush the cooling system when the manufacturer says !!!!

Hey, Just so everybody in deli land knows, the reason for my lack of interior heat was if fact due to a expired thermostat. As my van was still under warrenty I brought it back down to Japanoid and they plunked in a new one. Now the interior is tosty warm, the temp guage on the dash actually moves beyond the C, and the van no longer shudders like a bomb just hit it when I turn it off.

celebrate good times.

one more note. Who in Squamish owns the silver delica with chrome bars that was parked at the movie theater last tuesday night? That is probally one of the coolest looking delis I've ever seen.

thanks to everyone who helped point me in the right direction!
