Ignoring my glow plug issue, I need help diagnosing a knocking/tapping within the first minute of cold starting.
The video below is a minute long. It shows starting up, the smoke coming out of the exhaust, and then I go to the engine bay where you can hear the knocking/tapping and you can also see how rough the idle is (the block shakes).
By the end of the video I rev to 1000-1100 rpm and then let it idle again and it smooths out and the knock is almost inaudible.

what could this knocking/tapping be while it warms up?
It runs/idles/cruises great. Just the noise I am worried about. What should I start looking at?
(I used the camera feature on my phone so the microphone also picked up a lot of stray sound as well)

Re: Start up knocking/tapping
Did you say you have issues with glow plugs? That will cause cold combustion, light coloured smoke and rough idle. The smoke is unburnt diesel, basically it's partially combusting. Check your plugs and make sure they are working correctly. At normal cold start they should be glowing for a few minutes from cold and help heat up combustion.

Stever time to bite the bullet and take it to the techs at CVI or Rising Sun and get it properly diagnosed. Its way too hard to assess a problem over the internet based on noise alone.
It could be injector pump, piston slap, valve train noise, loose timing chain, loose silent shaft chain, crankshaft bearing noise, connecting rod noise. The fact it goes away after few minutes is not an indicator of a minor problem but its not an indicator of a serious issue either.
Get this noise checked out by someone who has a trained ear and can place their hands on your Delica and tell you what is really happening. I trust Butch at CVI and I think Steven's crew at Rising Sun would also be helpful.

I understand that that is the best option, but by the time I drive there the engine would be warm and the sound would disappear making it more difficult to explain my problem to themBig-Bird wrote:Stever time to bite the bullet and take it to the techs at CVI or Rising Sun and get it properly diagnosed. Re: Start up knocking/tapping
Sounds exactly like your glow plugs are not working properly. What was the outside temp when you started the car? In my van weak glow plugs show up at 5 Celsius and below.
Honestly, and for everyone: GET YOUR GLOW PLUGS WORKING PROPERLY. I re-re'd a fuel pump seal trying to fix weird starting issues, only for it to be bad glowplugs.

Glowplugs.....did you not just change these??? Mind you if you got a cheapy set they can be NFG before they are installed...been burned once by an ebay purchase when I first got my Delica. Dam things puked in -20C......that sucked changing them in winter outside!
I had to relisten to your video with a headset on and the knocking isn't knocking....its rough idle. Pull the glow plugs again and do a ohms check on each one. If any of them read zero then they are broken. The amount of white smoke is nothing really. These old Delis need a fair amount of TLC but thankfully most of it relates to simple maintenance....just need to be vigilant about it.
If you have further concerns then i still say take it to a tech...if the issue is bad when the engine is cold then be prepared to leave it overnight with the shop so they can hear it under the same cold engine conditions as you.
Honestly I dont know why anyone would risk serious engine damage to save money on an inspection that could tell you the issue is either no big deal (what a relief) or the issue was caught before serious damage occured.

Fair enough, I will contact a dealer next week and leave it over night. Thanks for the suggestionBig-Bird wrote:Glowplugs.....did you not just change these???
