L400 options
I'm looking into the possibility of going to an L400, one thing I'm wondering about is if some of the options that I really want are easy or at least not next to impossible to install in a van that didn't have them. Specifically the digital compass/temp gauge in the 3 pod cluster, the electric curtains (not the shades in the crystal light windows), and the climate control (that one I assume would be the most difficult but doesn't hurt to ask :))

Re: L400 options
They came with the 3-pod cluster
voltmeter (analog)
my van is tilting meter (analog)
combo compass/thermometer (in/out) (digital)
they come with dual climate control as well (front and rear separate controls)
the exceed / royal exceeds came with the digital climate control both front and rear digital displays whereas the base models came with analog controls like the L300
the panels are the same for all of the above so I'm guessing it's a direct swap
Mitsubishi likes outfiting all their vehicles with the same wiring looms spanning across different models.
The curtains may be harder as you'd probably have to drill the holes to mount the rails. You'd have to take a panel off the check.

I have seen lots of pics of vans latey and most seem to just have the same in/out temp instead of the compass/temp.
when I say climate control I mean the digital one the other is dual zone as well yes but not climate control as it wont adjust to a temp at all it's just pumping the same amount of hot or cold that you set all the time.
I'm pretty sure I have seen super exceeds without the digital climate control or the compass.
as for my original question I'm just curious if anyone has had any of these vans apart enough to see what is involved in each of those options.
the 3 pod I would guess would be easiest with just replacing the pod or just the gauge and also add the sensors. the curtains could go either way but are probably a huge pain and the climate control I'm guessing would be not worth it, but I don't know so I'm asking :)

Re: L400 options
I can check for you.
It wouldn't be hard as long as I have a L400 that has the manual controls.
I have the digital one.
All I'd need to do is take the bezel off and look at the air/heater control wiring loom.
If it's the same as the lower model one, then it's just a matter of swapping out the box. A few screws. Easy.
I'm guessing it's that easy because behind my digital control box for the air/heat controls, there are two plugs that look the same. One is plugged in and one is not plugged in with a plastic removable cap on it. I'm guessing that one is for the manual air/heat control box.

wicked, I sometimes forget that the Japanese built cars right, they often use one wiring harness for all trim levels, and if your car doesn't get that option the plug just sits there.

Re: L400 options
one more thing I was just wondering about, I remember it being said that there was no way to get a front locker for the L300 without swapping in an axle from something else completely, is there a locker that will work in the stock L400 front axle? I'm assuming that the back would be possible please correct me if I'm wrong here too

Re: L400 options
I was just poking around the aus site and it seems that a front locker is possible, someone mentioned the posibility of the locker (or maybe it was a welded diff) up front would make the super select not behave normally not sure.loki wrote:one more thing I was just wondering about, I remember it being said that there was no way to get a front locker for the L300 without swapping in an axle from something else completely, is there a locker that will work in the stock L400 front axle? Re: L400 options
Never ever weld diff (open) gears. Not on rigs like these.
FRONT :
ARB makes a front air locker for the Pajero/Montero, not the Delica L300/Spacegear L400.
The 2.8TD Delica 94-97 has a 4.875 ratio diff with a crown wheel 7.5" diameter.
The 2.8TD Pajero 94-97 has a 4.9 ratio diff with a crown wheel 8" diameter.
To fit a front locker in a 94+ Spacegear, you'll need to source a Montero/Pajero 3.0 V6 front axle/drive shafts and shorten the front drive shaft by 10mm.
REAR :
ARB makes a rear air locker for the Pajero/Montero/Spacegear L400(LWB only), not the Delica L300 / Short wheelbase Spacegear L400
Spacegear L400 LWB (left) Spacegear L400 SWB (right)

Re: L400 options
thanks, just to be clear, I personally wouldn't weld a diff on anything but a 100% offroad rig.jfarsang wrote:Never ever weld diff (open) gears. Not on rigs like these.
from what I saw on the aus forums, there are 2 different front diffs, and the one guy was quoted a price by arb for front and rear (it was very expensive though so maybe it included a new carrier or what have you? It's not like it's urgent or anything anyways, I don't even have an L400 and if I did the money to get lockers of any kind is many years in the future

Re: L400 options
Confirmed :
Digital climate controls - super exceed / royal exceed
Analog climate controls - exceed / base
You cannot retrofit the digital control pod into the analog pod.
The digital pod has four electric plugs in the rear
The analog pod has one electric plug and push/pull wire controls for the fans
I had both pods in front of me and both model spacegears side by side.
They are not interchangeable.
