4M41 vs 4M40

Has anyone seen the 4M41 engine?

The reason I ask, is that we seem to be going through a good deal of work trying to get the 4M40 engines to put out more power, and it seems as if there is a 4M41 that has a lot more oomph out there. I have not heard of anyone with a Delica/Pajero with one in Canada, nor do I even know if one is available.

Sounds like it would be a good engine for something like the Super Exceeded project...

My wife's delica has the timing advanced and it helps alot. Yesterday I turned up the pump on my Pajero and the difference is very noticable. There is alot more you can do (intake/exhaust/electric rad fan) that will add to those gains....For the size/purpose of the vehicle, the 4M40 can be adjusted to suit your needs....

Can't you just buy the engine separate?

Hi,
yes, i did seen this 4m41 engine thru a mitsubishi strada.
its a crdi engine electronic engine.
wow lots of horsepower, no smoke runs like a V6 engine;
totally diff the 4m40, but same 4 cyl.
did drive on it but wow really fast and strong.test drive this in the phils last march of 2011
i can order thsi engine if anybody wants it. but need th computer on this one also as this is a crdi engine system.

I saw something that suggested you had to change the transmission as well to get the 4m41 installed as well.

Well, if I get my letter of compliance so that I may import my Delica into the US, I might just go for this in the future.

It seems that no one else has done it. The reason you need to port over the transmission and all the electrics is that the ECU won't interface with all the Delica components. So, while hardware wise it is a simple and direct swap into the Delica, electronics wise, it is apparently an nightmare. This is according to the Oz crew.

So far, no one has done it to date with a Delica to my knowledge. A pajero has been done.

The only a few ways to get your hands on a 4M41:

1: Buy the JDM Pajero that it comes in which may or may not be within the 15 year age limit....I think it has another year to go.....not sure.

OR:

2: Buy a front clip off a wrecked Pajero with the 4M41...that way you get the tranny and the entire fuel management system. And yes you can buy a front clip from japan that is less than 15 years because the IMPORT rules only apply to complete cars.

I have poked around to see if the stock 4M40 could be stroked into a 3.2L...and yes its possible but the 16 valve head off the 4M41 may not fit a stock 4M40 block. So if you kept the stock 4M40 head the engine would probably be starved for air....which means bigger turbo...or god forbid small dual turbos! And what about the stock fuel system on the 4M40..Could the fuel pressure be boosted enough to feed a stroked 4M40 or would a injector change fix that concern?


There are subtle differences between a Delica and the Pajero 2.8 power plants.

The oil dip sticks are in different locations. (I seem to recall that the oil pick up tubes are also different).
The Pajero engine generates a tad more heat than its Delica counterpart....check out the rads guys..Paj is thicker and the thermostats have different temp ranges.

The 4M41 has been called a freight train of an engine because of the power this monster generates and most of that, at least according to a few automotive journals I have thumbed through, has a lot to do with the computer/variable timing and fuel sytem that Mitsu felt they just had to install on the venerable motor.....

(wah!!!! Why didn't the Delica D5 get this instead of the 2.4 diesel they slapped into the D5?) :-(

When one of you guys attempts the switch, Ill take your 4m40 off your hands.

Maybe try stuffing it into my 300!

I've heard that they don't fit. Having said that I haven't tried. I'll bet VR Trooper could make it fit! It'd be cool to see the 4M40 and the 4D56T together on mounts, so you could walk around them and compare them.
