L400 Headlight Problems
Just got a new Delica 95 L400 and found a dead headlight. They work when highbeams are on so I swaped the working lowbeam into the non working side to test if it was just the bulb and now both low beams are not working, but still work on high beam. Ive found the fuse but I have now idea what I'm looking for in a blown fuse as Ive never seen a fuse like this before.(Coiled wire fuseing). Any help would be apperciated. thanks

Re: L400 Headlight Problems
Fist find out Why the fuse blew, is there a scratch or cut in the wire where its grounding and blowing the fuse,
Second, Take out the hard to find fuse and put in one that can be sourced from any auto parts store...

Is this your van ?

I see no mention of a DRL module or separate daytime running lights installed.
I would ask the seller you bought it from if they had a DRL module wired into the stock headlight/switch.
If it's not the bulb and the fuse is blowing, something is causing it like Falco said. Trace the source.

Re: L400 Headlight Problems
Have something similar on mine (1994 L400)........ have not had a chance to investigate yet......
Driver's side low does not come on when it should.......... however it does come on when High Beams selected. Will post when I get a chance to take a looky.

Re: L400 Headlight Problems
KK, got a chance....... spent WAY TOO much time on this one........... short version:
THE LIGHT BULB IS BURNT OUT
----> change them "both"
Here is my technical cop out........ the low beam bulbs are dual filament that operate slightly differently from low to high beam (as I found out with the meter), the voltage inputs change and the L/H and R/H "talk" to each other........... there, that's all I have time for on this one.
Outermost filament of my driver's bulb was blown (may not be able to see the problem), went down to crappy tire, donated a bunch of money, spent all of 3-4 minutes swapping both bulbs and now I can see
NOTE: 3-4min will probably only apply if you have smaller hands like mine..... sorry to the apes out there, the L/H may be a fight unless you remove or move something for access.
Good Luck, hope this helped!

Re: L400 Headlight Problems
Thanks for all the info guys. Looks like I had a brain fart and mistakenly changed the high beams instead of the low beam, will try again tomorrow when I can see straight.
Success! I was blind but now I see.

Re: L400 Headlight Problems
I need a bulb for my 1st generation L400 (1994).
My van was retrofitted with 2nd generation L400 headlamps and I've broken one so I'm going back to the original set-up.
I have the new headlamp, but need bulbs. I have figured out the highbeam but need to find the right low beam.
I can only find dual beam (two filament) H4 bulbs and seeing the post above I'm now wondering if this is the right one (I've been looking for single filament bulbs thinking I only need a Low beam).
Anyone confirm what Low Beam bulb to use (my van has an adaptor to go from the H4 triple prong to the H7 dual prong that comes with the second gen L400 and I'm hoping to just go back to the original set-up whatever that is).
Cheers, Darren

Re: L400 Headlight Problems
The only way a 2nd gen headlight set will fit a 1st gen is if the fenders and hood were also changed.
Got a pic of what you actually have for headlight glass? That would be more helpful.

Re: L400 Headlight Problems
Hi Big-Bird
Thanks for your reply. Doesn't really matter what's in the van now. Maybe it is just the glass, but the bulb sizes for low beam is not the same as what I am putting in (a first series unit, what it should have).
I just need to know what bulb it uses. I'm confused because all I can find are two filament H4 bulbs (I'm told 12v H4-60/55 are what is used). And this is my confusion: the low and high beam are two separate units and not single high/low unit, so I would think a single filament bulb would be used, but what do I know.
Anyway, I'm going to try the H4-60/55 (for 1st gen L400 low beam), but I'm looking for confirmation if I can find it.
Cheers, Darren
pic below is not mine, but what mine looks like.

Re: L400 Headlight Problems
Well shoot, thats a first! I always wondered how that would look but was convinced and told this wasn't possible. I have seen the front clip from a Gen 2 swapped onto a Gen 1 L400 its not a common swap. Fenders, hood, bumper are all different between the 2 styles.
Here's what you need for the L400 Headlight Bulbs
1st Gen: H4 (hi-lo) H1 (hi)
2nd Gen: H7 (?hi-lo?) H1 (hi)
The gen 1 delica uses a dual filament H4 in the outer most reflector and your stock plug should have 3 wires for lo-hi beam operation.....unless some genious removed a wire at some point and made it Low Beam only...hope not!
