clunking noise on driver side...

Post by fishslapper »

Hey there ..........time to play another game of "name the faulty component......"

When i put it in reverse and i am backing up with the steering wheel turned to the right. I have a clunking/grinding noise coming from the drivers side.. Almost like the sound a cv joint makes when it is on it's way out....

for 2000 points........name the component !!!!! for a bonus of 500 points give me the part number too!! :-D :M i am not sure what the problem is.

Mine's making some clunks during tight cornering, haven't figured it out yet, but it seems like it happens when weight shifts.

Yes, I'm still living with this problem too. It has gotten slightly worse over time and I am reasonably convinced it is as Mdrive has suggested and is a control arm bushing. It is most definitely from the front driver side suspension area and happens when reversing with wheels turned and occasionally going forward in off camber situations (ie, entering a steep uphill driveway from a flat road). I'm eventually going to have to take this to a professional and have it figured out. I was thinking Westcoast Alignment since they see alot of delis, other recommendations in Nvan or Vancouver / Burnaby?

A local tire shop said they would be glad to "investigate" but I figured they would be better spending their time on tires & wheels as opposed to trouble shooting my foreign bus.....and allowing me to pay for the time.

Shake the tire while on the ground or in the air if it moves in and out just a little ,its prob your tie rods ,I know this only because ive just replaced mine on the drivers side and its all good and solid now.Give that a try,it should feel like something is loose when you move the tire side to side. check the boots also see if there in ruff shape ,split cracked or in half any ways 100$per side 18$ for the boot. Its a fairly doityourselfer job just get realignment when done.

Sounds like m drive is right. mine did the same thing, lower control arm bushings had play. Its good as new now, there are 2 on each side. Worse clunking when it is really dry? not as bad when its very wet? like today? Then it likely is the CA Bushings. You will need to re align after its done. RJD in N Van can fix u up. go see Rich or Nathan.

Solved my clunking! I took an impact gun and long extension to the 4 carriage bolts holding the front suspension to the unibody frame... I couldn't really see if they moved or not but they (or just one or two) must have been ever so slightly loose.

Tks for all for the great suggestions.
Have booked a visit with Richard & Nathan at RJD for this coming Wednesday.
He's aware of Sid's recommendation and I'll pass on the info about the subframe bolts - I believe I checked all of these before and they were ok (17mm bolts? Hope I found all the right one).
Will post once I've got Scoobs back.

I would not have guessed mine were at all loose by examining them, but clearly they were because the clunking is totally gone after tightening them.

Yessirreee. Clunking related to lower control arm bushings. Bushings on order now and soon to be all better.
RJD also tightened up a couple of other things that took away a few squeaks here and there - but the bushings need to come in from Rocky Mountain Imports, now relocated to Sidney - so won't be all done up till next week.

Well....my struggles continue.
RMI bushings didn't fit. RJD ended up getting entire A-Arm assembly from wrecked deli ex CCAuto. Installed today and fixed the subtle "clunking" that was noticeable from take off at stop light or occasional rough road - so that is the good news! Guys at RJD did say that A-Arm bushing was completely deteriorated but would still not likely fix the "big clunk". Parallel parked my baby this evening and sure enough - the BIG clunk is still there.

No reflection on RJD IMHO - but still quite sad for me. Was really hoping that the clearly degraded A-Arm bushing was the source of the problem. Scoobus drives great now under all conditions except for high degree of turn radius maneuvers....ie, parallel parking with max lock on steering.

My search continues...at cost! Will post more when known. Ouch.

Front subframe mounting bolts need to be resecured to cure the usual front `clunk` on turns . Not sure how to link the thread on this but it has been posted many times before . Loosen all subframe mounting bolts and then re-tighten them with a big bar . Works like a charm and costs nothing !!!
