What to do - one new rod bearing or a used short block?

Post by Dewy »

Hola Amigos!

So i have a question for you experienced diesel mechanics and shipping consultants or anyone who has an opinion.

So as you may or may not know from my previous posts i ran out of oil in mexico
and as a result I have shredded the 2nd rod bearing. http://www.delica.ca/Photos/albums/user ... ring_a.JPG nice!

and the crank shaft at the 2nd bearing is chewed pretty good.
The other rods and caps look to be fine, solid and not tainted black like the 2nd one.

so my choices;
1. only replace the 2nd bearing and get the crankshaft machined - price for a bearing not sure, getting that shipped here and machining the crankshaft out of town in pesos but not cheap so i am told? drive it home with fingers crossed.

or

2. replace the whole block, that Glenn has priced out a complete refurbished one for about $700, but getting here and i don't think you can bring it as 'carry on'. :-D DHL quoted me $500 :o to have it shipped to San Deigo and then i could pick it up there.

or

3. like Christine suggested towing it home, which could entail buying a vehicle and trailer for $2500-4000 or having an angel fall onto my lap that would be going north with an empty flatbed and there is a remote chance of that with a conversation i had last nite.

on the brighter side this little town that i now reside is gorgeous. I have landed a job selling timeshares, :? :?: and money is trickling in more than trickling out. and i am in no rush to get back to BC. here is my new bedroom. http://www.delica.ca/Photos/displayimag ... =122&pos=0

Thanks for your continued support.

Inspiring pics mate! Reminds me it's the journey, not the destination, that's important.

If the crank has any roughness on that journal at all, then it must be machined and new bearing installed. Anything short of doing that is not worth doing.

It is likely cheaper to get known good block and install it.

Also, get a good quality full-sweep oil pressure gauge and matching idiot light and have it installed as well... Oil should be checked every time you fill up - in an ideal world at least.

Hey,
If you decide on the short block, you probably want to pack it up in a nice wood box with pallet feet so it can be forklifted or pallet jacked around while it is in transport.
I can help with that part if you want,I live in Nanaimo and I could get the block from Glen then into a box (cheap or free) and get it to Victoria or Vancouver to send it on its merry way.

Another option is to look a little further south I think you may be able to find a whole 4D56 engine pretty cheap if you poke around.

http://www.mitsubishi-motors.com/

You can check that out,on the global page check out latin america.

Most of the links are phone numbers instead of webpages so you would have to do some phone work.

Sometimes they use old tooling and put out products that have ben discontinued else where.
Volkswagen does that in mexico they made the old Beetle until a few years ago and I think,
they are still making the old Rabbit there (77-84 up here)

http://www.mitsubishimotors.com.mx/index.asp
thats the Mexico link, I did not see any
Delica DNA in the lineup, but maybee they could bring something in.
They may not be as unwilling to help as our Mitsi dealers up here, especially if they used the
4d56 in something there .(a car, van, forklift maybe even a generator)

Actually sounds to me like a pretty sweet situation to be stranded in,and I saw some surfboards on the Van in your pics
so don't rush back to fast! :-D
Let me know if I can help!
Right on! 8-)

I have to echo this one.... I discovered (the hard way) that the factory "idiot light" was in fact designed by an idiot, and only comes on once you are down more than 5 litres!!

So i just got off the phone with Glenn and it looks like he is going to do a thorough check on a used block and send it down.

Luna-Sea if you can help with figuring out the most economical way to how to ship it down that would be fantastic. I am in Loreto on the sea of Cortes. Jack Cousteau called this area the aquarium of the world and the blue whales are visiting right now. Cheap $300 round trip flights out of Seattle to here supposedly. Anyone is welcome to visit. Glenn is going to make a few calls. as well i am not sure if i mentioned this before i could make my way up to san diego to bring it over the border.

As for the oil thing, yeah i wont go a day without checking the oil. As for the idiot light, yep an idiot installed it on this deli and it did not ever come, which should have been a good indicator for myslef.

and the surf is on the other side of the baja but i will get there one of these days.

Oh well the adventure continues. :-D

Thanks again for all your support.

Hey,
Went up to Coombs for looky-lou of CC auto and what not and talked to Glen about your situation.
He has a nice block all picked out and he is checking out various shipping options.
I offered to help get it to Vancouver if it will help keep the costs down and to help making up
a pallet box for shipping. It would be nice to do something Delica related that does not have to be perfect just
tough for the shipping. :-D

Pretty amicable fellow that Glen as well as his dad other mechanics and the token canadian guy! :-)

Looks like you solution is being well formulated at any rate!

Right on! 8-)
