Timing Belt maintenance

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Timing Belt maintenance

Hi
I posted earlier about trying to find out if my timing belt was done.
Apparently the previous owner didn't get it done.
I'm wanting it done :)
Being in Saskatoon I am sourcing the parts needed.
For this do I need to get the timing belt / balancer belt and tensioner replaced?
I have some part numbers for my engine from the wiki.
My motor is 4D56T - 1990
What else should I be looking at here.
There are no maintenance stickers in the motor compartment suggesting
things that were done.

If you are doing the timing belt it is good maintenance practice to do a few other things while you are in there:
Timing belt
Balance shaft belt
Balance and Timing belt tensioners
Water pump
Thermostat
Front oil seals 4 of them if I remember correctly.

Buy quality stuff, dont cheap out. I bought gates belts and tensioners, gmb water pump. I would contact one of the reputable dealers from this fourm and they can send you everything you need. If you want to buy local you can get the belts and tensioners from NAPA, but the water pump and thermostat would have to come from an importer. The oil seals can be matched up at a bearing and seal supply retailer, but it is way easier to get them from who ever gets you the water pump.

You should be able to get everything you need in saskatoon, after all they have 9 pajeros for the bylaw enforcement....... ( same engine) See if you can find a contact with the city.

The pajero's were imported by D&D imports in Prince Albert.
I will call and talk to him about where the work is done for the units.

I called and talked to the guy at D&D and he won't give me the
name of his mechanic. He has some jobs that he doesn't want interupted
by a retail job that his mechanic is already doing.
A little ticked at that.

I bet the mechanic wouldn't be too happy about the city guy manipulating his schedule either. Maybe look out for city workers in those trucks and ask them :M

The city does their own maintenance on their 'fleet'
However UPDATE :)
Found an import shop here with a mechanic from overseas who said:
"oooh, back home I worked on lots of those..."
I told him what I was needing and he said no problem. Didn't even
'blink <if you could see someone not blink on the phone>'
I will head over there and talk to them first.
But it's a good sign.
I asked about parts and he said he has a supplier in BC for
all that stuff. I'm feeling a bit happier about this looking around
stuff now :)

balance shaft belt failed and got caught in the timing belt

Replace those belts/pulley's people ! :-D

For anyone else reading this thread ... everyone talks about replacing all those belts, tensioners, waterpump, etc., at 90,000 km. What no one seems to be remembering is that these items are also time-limited, not just mileage. The usual rating is 90k kilometres or 5 years. So if you have a low mileage Deli (that was my case), or don't know if it was changed, just get it done. If the timing belt breaks, you are looking at a destroyed head at a minimum, and therefore probably a new engine to the tune of $3-5000. Not worth it. Peace of mind and all that.

When my timing belt was being done at 24,000 km and 15 years, it was found that the waterpump was leaking. So it was changed too. (This was before it became common knowledge to just change all of it.)

I don't understand why engine makers ever made/make interference engines - why aren't they all non-interference?? Seems strange to bet the entire inner workings of engines on rubber belts or chains...

Interference engines allow for more compression (piston gets closer to the top of the cylinder because it gets right in to the valve space) as a result, all, or at least nearly all, diesels are interference engines, it would be much harder to design an engine with enough compression if the piston couldn't get that close to the top of the cylinder.

Not quite sure why timing chains aren't used though. I freakin hate timing belts.

Agreed. My last car, a Toyota Echo, had a chain and was rated for something silly like 400 000kms before changing.

timing chains are more expensive than the belts, but are usually rated for about 300,000km instead of 100,000 for a belt.

Belts are also usually quieter and smoother, though how much you'd actually notice is a different matter.

I prefer timing gears like on the nissan safari, they last longer that the rest of the engine.
