How much weight can you carry inside your Delica?
Title says it all. I want to bring as much oil as possible for my road trip across the country but don't want to kill the van either. I'm planning on having 9 cubes behind the rear bench (9x40lbs= 360lbs) and 12 on the rear hitch basket (480lbs) plus I have 80 liters tank behind the rear axle (160lbs) so just in oil that puts 1000 lbs behind the axle. Good thing those van are nose heavy!
Is that too much? I'll also have other gears but I'll try to keep it on the light side, maybe a couple hundred pounds with tools and spare. As for passengers there's only me, my 2yrs old and my old dog for a package deal of 250lbs.
So, somewhere close to 1500 lbs, (that's like 7 x 200lbs passengers) will I make it up the Rockies? I'm thinking of running the rubber at 40psi.
Thanks!
ps. I was supposed to leave today but just got a bad cold and I'm also running late getting ready... Looking at Monday now.

Ya, except that a lot of the weight will be behind (or just about) the rear axle... might have to re-adjust my headlights!

as long as you make sure that the weight is even on each tire, I dont see why it would be a problem. I move with the van full ( really full) with my motorcycle in tow, no problem ( a bit slower but that expected considering!!!) Have a good trip, and keep us in touch. Pedro

Noobie question:
Are rear shocks adjustable?
Or am I thinking too much like a mtb biker.

Re: How much weight can you carry inside your Delica?
The max cross weight of a Delica is 2505kg.
You probably can easy load a few hundred kg more, but is it good for a long trip...I don't know
I was already surprised to see 2380kg on the truck scale even if we had just a little bit of camping gear and 2 passengers. It seems you can not even take a hand bag with you if you have 7 passengers :)
It should be no problem, but make sure the weight rating of the tires are fine too.

A slight side track-----
Did you ever fix your BOV or " safety valve". I would think it would be a real nuisance going up hills with all that weight?

I'm not sure anymore about the Pop valve. I've changed my waste gate and the blow off has gone away but it doesn't really justify it. I've tried different boost gauges and got different results so I may have been hitting the 15psi all along while using the first gauge?!?
Time will tell...

According to news reports, police in Indonesian suspected there was in excess of 1600kg of explosives inside the L-300 used for the 2002 bombings. Somehow, I don't think the owner was too worried about the state of the suspension after that 'journey'. BTW, that's over 80 cubes of WVO, which given a cube's dimensions, I don't think there is enough interior volume to carry that many!fexlboi wrote:The max cross weight of a Delica is 2505kg.

And now that I've removed my tongue from my cheek, I hauled a utility trailer and 6 people and 2 dogs, from Victoria to Calgary, over the Kootenay Pass (+1700m). True, there were a couple of sections when I was down to 20 or 30km/h, but keep an eye on your pyrometer and you should be okay with the load you're talking about.
I do know that Lucienne had 500kg of drywall in the back, and it didn't falter at that. A little slower, yes, but hey this ain't the Bonneville Flats, is it?

The owner's manual says 750 kilos.
The most I've ever had in Gumdrop is about 500 kilos. Not very fast up Jackass Summit or Begbie Summit, but Gumdrop is no speed demon at the best of times. I always load the area between the seats first, inside the wheelbase, then the rear load bay. YMMV.

Re: How much weight can you carry inside your Delica?
Well,
I've load up the van with 9 cubes behind the rear bench and 10 on the hitch basket (plus 4 in my wvo tank) and I didn't like how the van's nose lifted upward. At night I'd be blinding incoming traffic for sure! I still have my rear bench and other gears inside and on top of the van so it's getting heavy... I ended up moving most of the cubes inside the truck and I'll simply have to move them out when sleeping in the van. Kinda sucks.
Anyway, I should be ready to head out tomorrow. If you see a white van with the front wheels barely touching the ground that would be me...

Re: How much weight can you carry inside your Delica?
I'm scared of those delicate little cubes for transporting WVO and found that two of them fight perfectly in a Rubbermaid rough-tote. The lid fits on nicely and they can be stacked. I just shudder at the thought of a full cube of goo pouring out of a ruptured cube

Re: How much weight can you carry inside your Delica?
I just had 8 4x8 sheets of 5/8 ply, 24 sheets of 3/8 ply and 60 8 ft 2x4s. I don't know what that weighs, but it was slow going. I wouldn't load that much up, but I don't think you're too close to that.
and you'll be through 2 cubes by the time you get to princeton and it only gets easier, so I wouldn't be too concerned.

Re: How much weight can you carry inside your Delica?
I would agree with the general sense that you can put a lot of weight in the Delica and be fine, but you will sacrifice speed on any hills. You'll just want to take it easy and not try and maintain the speed and "acceleration" you're used to. I have loaded up my Delica and trailer with about 1500 lbs of cargo between the two and on the flat prairie highways it is very happy to cruise along at 100 kmh. Also very smooth when you get a bit of weight in the van.

Re: How much weight can you carry inside your Delica?
Glad to hear your playing it safe and moving the cubes forward; its April and your headed east so snow covered roads might be encountered. Stay safe.
I to have driven the coke with a weeks worth of camping gear while pulling a 17 foot boat with a 75hp motor. With my WVO was riding in the boat, so it made for 40 km on the steeps which surprisingly didn't make me the slowest on the hill. Going down was different, the grease on the hubs (from the ball joints attention before going) were smoking like crazy.
Happy Trails,
Kev
