Another 2-wire temperature sensor

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Another 2-wire temperature sensor

Post by mararmeisto »

So I changed this back in September, but I guess the Lordco one just doesn't measure up to spec...

Actually, I know it doesn't measure up to specifications, which is probably why I'm changing the blasted thing again.

Anyway, symptoms as observed: temperature gauge on dash does not read correctly - too high, too low, moving all over the place when engine warmed up, I'm thinking it's not reading correctly; glow plug solenoid is clicking like a pair of castanets behind the driver's seat (ECU thinks the engine is cold).

So, this time, no mucking about, get the proper Mitsubishi part from Rocky Mountain Imports ('cause that's what he's bringing in), five minutes in the driveway with a socket and voila! No more clattering of the glow plug solenoid, temperature gauge is correct and I'm not having to be explaining what kind of vehicle my van is 'like' to the poor guy at the Lordco counter who can't look anything up unless he knows what vehicle it's for.

Thanx John for the proper part! :-D

This is curious to me. Was the ECU clicking away for the 1st minute or so after startup?

My most recent development is that I now get the "click-click" (in the same of time it took you to read it) about ten times with very short pauses between each set of clicks just after startup. This is a new thing and has started in tandem with the warmer weather we're having in Van lately. My temp gauge is reading normally.

The question is, is this a normal occurrence for the summer/warmer weather? or have I found myself in your boat mararmeisto?

If the engine is warm enough, as it might likely be coming on this time of year, the first click may be simultaneously with your turning of the key. The same as when the engine is hot.

There is a second sequence for firing the plugs, after startup, which rapidly fires the plugs until full operating temperature is reached. This would be the click-click you are hearing. Of course, if the temperature sensor is faulty, it will continue to rapid fire the plugs even after you've driven out to the airport and back (which was the scenario in my case).

If yours is clicking for a bit and then stopping, and the temperature gauge is reading correctly, I would say your glow plug setup is working correctly.

By your description of the second sequence of firings, it sounds like I'm alright: there is no clicking when driving. Just lots of clicking for the first minute or so.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Which is the 2-wire temp sensor?

Thanks.
