Rotors rotating / Removing Auto Hubs - Failure to Success

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

FAILURE :-(

There is one tiny screw attaching the caliper to the rotor and it was stripped! :-x

I came so close but it looks like I will have to give in and take it to the shop. I'm pretty pissed off because of spending money and time on something and getting nothing out of it. It's also the first thing I've attempted on the vehicle that hasn't been a success.

The other bummer is that I'm going to have to get ANOTHER wheel alignment after this (my third in 2 months) :shock:

On the plus side, that impact driver was a life saver!!!

How is working on the front rotors/calipers related to a wheel alignment? :?

I'm not reading this right.

The caliper is attached to the caliper mounting bracket by two 14mm bolts (slider bolts). The caliper mounting bracket is attached to the hub by two 17mm large/short bolts.

None of that has to do with the rotor. Are you talking about the little 10mm bolt that attaches at the top of the rotor dust shield ? It has a phillips screw head but it's also removable via 10mm socket/wrench.

As you have probable noticed from past threads, my terminology needs some work :-D

http://rides.webshots.com/photo/1362230 ... 7953AfDBfw This is what I'm trying to remove. It has a phillips head on it. The other problem is the 17mm bolt at the bottom of rear of the caliper for which I cannot seem to find a ratchet that's shallow / 'small headed' enough.

As for the wheel alignment, I was told by butch at CVI that the allignment would be out again after having taken off the rotors to remove the studs. I'm not sure of the how or why... :?

To remove that philips take some vice grip pliers, clamp them on and tap the pliers with a hammer to crack the bolt loose. You may shear it off which is fine. It's not structural.

You'll need a 17mm shallow socket and trick is to turn the wheel so you have all the room needed to get it out.

Call me if you need some more help. I'm working on a small project at the hospital solo so the phone is open. The doctor is in. The pharmacist can dispense medical knowledge. The neighbour can offer a second opinion. The wizard can offer guidance ... you get the drift :-D

Then you should ask Butch for the technical explanation. I would like to know how the geometry of the front end changes after working on the brakes. I hope you are not removing the ball joints to get to the brakes. :-D

Looks like I'm going to have to get a shop to finish this job though. I would love to push on and follow jfarsangs advice but I won't have access to a driveway again for another few weeks. At least I now know how to do it though.

Well, I found a thread stating that the size of stud is 12X1.25. Turns out it's actually 12X1.5. Lucky for me the shop that wrecked my studs in the first place was very good to deal with (although never admitted to anything) They wrecked 3 studs on 1 wheel but in the end replaced all of my studs and lug nuts for both front wheels, didn't charge me for parts and only charged my 30 min labour. I'm happy to pay $40 to have this done professionally and to be able to still have a good re-pore with the tire shop in my neighbourhood.

Now to take back the studs and lug nuts that were the wrong size and see some money come in :-D

I too tried the 12x1.25 size after waiting a week to get them in only to find out that I need the 12x 1.5 which were there all the time. Don't believe everything you read on the internet.
